Defence Current Affairs 27 February 2026

India’s defence landscape is witnessing rapid transformation through strategic acquisitions, international partnerships, domestic manufacturing growth, and evolving regional security challenges. Several recent developments highlight the country’s focus on strengthening military preparedness while navigating complex geopolitical realities.

Indian Navy Advances Project 75(I) With TKMS

The Indian Navy has reportedly completed cost negotiations with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the construction of six advanced diesel-electric submarines under Project 75(I). This development represents a major milestone in India’s efforts to modernise its underwater combat capabilities.

Project 75(I), officially approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security in 2019, carries an estimated budget of ₹43,000 crore. The initiative aims to build six next-generation conventional submarines equipped with advanced propulsion systems and enhanced indigenous technologies.

At present, India operates 16 conventional submarines, many of which are approaching the end of their operational lifespan, along with two nuclear-powered attack submarines. The induction of the new vessels is expected to significantly strengthen maritime deterrence and bring the total number of diesel-electric submarines to 24 by the mid-2030s. These submarines will complement the ongoing Project 75 programme being executed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, where submarines such as INS Kalvari are already in service.

The deal underscores India’s determination to maintain a credible naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region amid shifting security dynamics.

Israel to Share Iron Dome and Iron Beam Technology

In a significant boost to bilateral defence cooperation, Israel is reportedly preparing to transfer core technological components of its renowned Iron Dome and the newer Iron Beam systems to India.

The move is expected to be authorised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during high-level engagements with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Iron Dome system has demonstrated high interception success against short- and medium-range missile threats, playing a central role in Israel’s air defence network. The newer Iron Beam system, based on directed-energy laser technology, is designed to intercept aerial threats at a lower operational cost.

An anticipated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries could potentially unlock defence agreements worth up to $10 billion. Full technology transfer would significantly deepen strategic trust between the two nations and strengthen India’s indigenous air defence ecosystem.

Sunita Tools Secures ₹576 Crore Defence Contract

In a major boost for India’s private defence manufacturing sector, Sunita Tools Limited has secured a ₹576 crore contract for supplying 2,40,000 empty 155mm M107 artillery shells built to NATO standards.

The order, classified as a deemed export, will be executed over a two-year period. With an estimated monthly billing of around ₹24 crore, the contract ensures steady revenue flow and marks a transformative moment for the company’s financial trajectory.

The 155mm M107 shells are widely used in modern artillery systems, and adherence to NATO specifications enhances the company’s prospects in both domestic and international markets. This development aligns with India’s broader objective of strengthening indigenous ammunition production under the “Make in India” framework and boosting defence exports.

Vayushakti-26: IAF Demonstrates Combat Readiness

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has completed the full dress rehearsal for Exercise Vayushakti-26 at the Pokhran firing range in Jaisalmer.

The large-scale exercise is designed to display the IAF’s precision strike capabilities, integrated air operations, and network-centric warfare systems. Scheduled for 27 February, the event will demonstrate how tactical missions translate into strategic outcomes.

Beyond combat demonstrations, the exercise will also highlight the IAF’s contributions to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, including evacuation missions and rapid response deployments both within India and abroad. The showcase reinforces the Air Force’s operational preparedness and technological advancement.

Rising Tensions: Pakistan–Afghanistan Border Escalation

Security tensions have intensified along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border following cross-border strikes and retaliatory actions. Pakistan reportedly conducted air and ground strikes targeting locations in Afghanistan, citing militant threats.

Pakistani authorities stated that the operations targeted positions associated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other armed groups. However, the Afghan Taliban administration has denied harbouring such militants and condemned the strikes.

Both sides have reported casualties and damage to military infrastructure, though independent verification remains limited. The escalation marks one of the most serious flare-ups in recent months along the 2,600-kilometre frontier, raising concerns over the stability of the fragile ceasefire and regional security balance.

Conclusion

These developments collectively illustrate the dynamic nature of South Asia’s defence and security environment. From naval modernisation and advanced missile defence cooperation to indigenous manufacturing growth and regional border tensions, India’s strategic posture is evolving rapidly.

As geopolitical uncertainties persist, defence preparedness, technological self-reliance, and strong international partnerships remain central to maintaining stability and safeguarding national interests.
