World Heritage Day 2026
Every year on April 18, the world observes World Heritage Day, formally known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites. This occasion highlights the importance of preserving humanity’s shared cultural and natural heritage.
The theme for 2026, “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters,” emphasizes the urgent need to safeguard heritage sites during crises such as wars, climate disasters, and natural calamities.
The idea for this global observance was first proposed in 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites. It was later officially recognized in 1983 by UNESCO.
The concept of “World Heritage” is guided by the 1972 World Heritage Convention, which aims to identify and protect sites of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV).
India continues to play a significant role in global heritage conservation. As of 2026, the country has 44 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, placing it among the leading nations in heritage recognition.

Setback for Women’s Representation
The Constitutional (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 was recently put to vote in the Lok Sabha following an intense debate. Despite securing 298 votes in favor and 230 against, the bill failed to pass due to not meeting the required majority.
Under the Constitution of India, constitutional amendments must satisfy strict criteria:
- Approval by at least two-thirds of members present and voting
- Support from more than 50% of the total strength of the House
Since the bill required 360 votes to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority, it fell short, marking a setback for enhanced women’s representation.
