World Tuna Day: Promoting Sustainable Fishing

Observed every year on May 2, World Tuna Day highlights the global importance of tuna as a vital source of nutrition and economic activity. Recognized by the United Nations, the day emphasizes the urgent need to conserve tuna species and promote responsible fishing practices.

Tuna plays a crucial role in food security, being rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, essential minerals, and Vitamin B12. It is also widely consumed in processed forms like canned tuna, making it a staple in households worldwide. Encouragingly, a large proportion of tuna stocks today are managed sustainably, reflecting growing international cooperation.

Efforts such as the Common Oceans Tuna Project, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aim to ensure that global tuna fishing remains within sustainable limits by 2027. This initiative supports biodiversity conservation while strengthening responsible fisheries management.

NDMA Tests Nationwide Cell Broadcast Alert System

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) conducted a nationwide test of India’s Cell Broadcast Alert System on May 2, 2026. Citizens across the country received a flash message as part of this trial exercise.

This system is designed to deliver real-time, location-based alerts during emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, and cyclones. Unlike traditional SMS services, it sends messages simultaneously to all mobile devices in a specific area, even during network congestion.

The system operates through the SACHET platform, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and aims to significantly improve India’s disaster response capabilities.

Government Introduces New Citizenship Rules, 2026

The Government of India has notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, introducing reforms to simplify and modernize citizenship procedures, particularly for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders.

Issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the updated rules emphasize digitalization and efficiency. All OCI-related services, including registration and renunciation, will now be processed online, reducing paperwork.

A key clarification states that minors cannot simultaneously hold Indian and foreign passports. The new framework also introduces the concept of electronic OCI (e-OCI), allowing applicants to receive either a physical or digital registration.

Additionally, individuals wishing to renounce OCI status must complete an online declaration and submit their original documents to the appropriate authorities. Applicants are also required to provide consent for participation in the Fast Track Immigration Program.
