International Firefighters’ Day 2026

International Firefighters’ Day is observed every year on 4 May to recognize the bravery, dedication, and service of firefighters across the globe. These professionals put their lives at risk to safeguard communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from fire-related disasters.

The day also pays tribute to firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Its origin is linked to a tragic wildfire incident in Victoria, Australia, in 1998, where five firefighters lost their lives while combating a blaze. In response, the global community came together, and the first official observance of this day was held in 1999. Since then, it has grown into an important international occasion honoring these everyday heroes.

India’s Campaign Ends in Thomas Cup 2026

India’s journey in the Thomas Cup 2026 concluded with a semifinal defeat against France, resulting in a bronze medal finish. The Indian team lost 0–3 in a one-sided contest, where French players dominated throughout the matches.

The absence of key player Lakshya Sen due to injury significantly impacted India’s performance. Prominent shuttlers like HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and Ayush Shetty were unable to secure victories, each losing in straight games.

Despite the loss, India’s bronze medal adds to its historical achievements in the tournament, with previous podium finishes in 1952, 1955, and 1979. Meanwhile, France created history by reaching its first-ever Thomas Cup final.

India Introduces First Barrier-Free Tolling System

India has taken a major step toward modern infrastructure by launching its first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in Gujarat. Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India, the system became operational at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48.

On its first day, over 41,500 vehicles passed through without stopping, showcasing the system’s efficiency. MLFF technology eliminates the need for physical toll booths, allowing vehicles to move seamlessly.

The system relies on:

  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for vehicle identification
  • FASTag for digital toll payments

Key Rules:

  • Payments must be completed within 72 hours
  • Delays can result in double toll charges
  • Repeated non-payment may lead to FASTag blacklisting and restrictions via the VAHAN system

This initiative marks a shift toward faster, technology-driven transportation.
