Mission for Cotton Productivity Approved
The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a major initiative worth ₹5,659 crore aimed at revitalizing India’s cotton sector over the period 2026–27 to 2030–31. Announced on May 5, 2026, this mission seeks to address persistent challenges such as declining yields, quality concerns, and reduced global competitiveness.
The programme adopts a comprehensive approach by strengthening the entire cotton value chain—from cultivation to exports—while promoting sustainability and enhancing farmers’ incomes. It aligns with the government’s broader “5F” vision: Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign.
Key Focus Areas
- Development of high-yield and climate-resilient seed varieties
- Promotion of modern and efficient farming practices
- Improvement in cotton quality and processing standards
- Expansion of testing and certification infrastructure
- Branding initiatives under “Kasturi Cotton Bharat”
Targets
- Increase production to 498 lakh bales
- Boost productivity from 440 kg/hectare to 755 kg/hectare by 2031
- Reduce contamination levels to below 2%
- Strengthen exports of premium-quality cotton
Maritime Infrastructure Boost at Vadinar
In another major decision, the Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi approved the establishment of a modern ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat. The project, estimated at ₹1,570 crore, will be executed by Deendayal Port Authority in collaboration with Cochin Shipyard Limited.
Vadinar has been selected due to its natural deep-draft advantage and proximity to major ports such as Mundra Port and Kandla Port. Its strategic location along key global shipping routes makes it ideal for servicing large commercial vessels.
The project is expected to enhance India’s maritime capabilities and strengthen its position as a global ship repair hub. It will also generate employment, creating around 290 direct and over 1,100 indirect jobs across associated sectors.
Expansion of Semiconductor Ecosystem
The Cabinet has approved two new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission, with a combined investment exceeding ₹3,900 crore. These facilities will be established in Gujarat and are expected to create more than 2,200 skilled jobs.
The approved projects include:
- A compound semiconductor fabrication unit with Mini/Micro LED production
- A semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) facility
A key project by Crystal Matrix Limited will be set up in Dholera, focusing on Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based semiconductor manufacturing. The facility will produce advanced LED display panels and GaN wafers annually.
With these additions, the total number of projects under the mission has reached 12, with cumulative investments nearing ₹1.64 lakh crore. The government is also supporting over 300 academic institutions to strengthen semiconductor design capabilities.
Proposal to Increase Supreme Court Strength
The Cabinet has approved a proposal to expand the strength of the Supreme Court of India from 34 to 38 judges. This will be implemented through the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026.
The move is aimed at improving judicial efficiency and reducing the backlog of pending cases. Once passed by Parliament, the amendment will add four more judges to the current sanctioned strength.
Historically, the number of judges has been increased several times since the enactment of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, reflecting the growing demands on the judiciary.
New Chairperson of CBFC Appointed
The government has appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification for a three-year term.
This appointment follows the transition of Prasoon Joshi to the role of Chairman of Prasar Bharati.
The CBFC operates under the Cinematograph Act 1952 and is responsible for certifying films for public exhibition in India. It ensures that films meet regulatory standards before release and currently issues multiple categories of certification, including U (unrestricted) and A (adult).
