Indian Vessel Being Helped

The Pakistan Navy recently demonstrated its commitment to maritime cooperation by successfully carrying out a rescue operation for an Indian vessel stranded in the Arabian Sea. This operation was initiated after a distress alert was received, underscoring the collaborative spirit in emergency maritime situations.

The vessel, identified as MV Gautam, encountered a significant technical failure due to a malfunctioning generator while making its way from Oman to India. This left it adrift in the vast sea. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai promptly notified authorities in Islamabad, triggering a rapid response from the Pakistan Navy.

In response, the Pakistan Navy dispatched the ship PMSS Kashmir to assist the distressed vessel. The crew on board MV Gautam, which included six Indian nationals and one Indonesian, received vital supplies, including food and medical assistance. Additionally, technical support was provided to help stabilize the situation and ensure the safety of the crew.

The operation was further backed by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), whose personnel boarded the MV Gautam to assess the damage. Unfortunately, upon inspection, it was determined that the vessel’s main generator was irreparable, complicating the situation further.

Indian sources revealed that MV Gautam experienced a total power failure on May 3 and was initially located within Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region before drifting into Indian waters. Communication from the stranded vessel was severely limited, as only basic systems functioning on battery backup were operational.

In a coordinated response, the Indian Coast Guard also dispatched a vessel to the area to provide additional help. Authorities emphasized the need for the ship’s owners to arrange towing support, as the vessel remains without propulsion, posing a potential navigational hazard.

This incident highlights the critical importance of regional maritime coordination and adherence to international protocols, ensuring the safety of seafarers despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Such collaborative efforts are vital to maintaining safety at sea and demonstrate a willingness to put aside differences in support of human life and maritime security.
