In a significant shift within India’s higher defence echelons, the Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The Ministry of Defence announced this decision on May 9, 2026. Lt Gen Subramani will also function as the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), officially starting his tenure following the completion of his predecessor, General Anil Chauhan’s term on May 30, 2026.
Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani arrives with over four decades of distinguished military service, recognized for his operational, command, instructional, and strategic expertise. His career has taken him to critical operational theatres, including Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and along India’s sensitive western and northern borders. He is often described as a seasoned military strategist due to his extensive experience in these areas.
Before his new appointment, Lt Gen Subramani served as the Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) starting September 1, 2025. He held the Vice Chief of the Army Staff position from July 2024 to July 2025, further establishing his credentials within the armed forces. His prior command roles include leading the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command between March 2023 and June 2024, where he was responsible for overseeing one of the Indian Army’s strategically vital operational segments.
An alumnus of both the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, Lt Gen Subramani was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the The Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985. He further honed his military expertise at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and the National Defence College in New Delhi. Academically, he holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University.
Throughout his career, Lt Gen Subramani has commanded several prestigious and operationally critical formations within the Indian Army. His noteworthy command appointments include leadership of the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino, command of the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu & Kashmir, and leading the elite 2 Corps on the Western Front, regarded as the premier strike corps of the Indian Army.
In addition to his diverse field command experience, he has held numerous influential staff and instructional positions that have greatly contributed to India’s operational and strategic military planning. His assignments include serving as a Divisional Officer at the NDA, Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade, Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, and Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Command, among others. Analysts believe that his comprehensive knowledge of India’s Western and Northern borders is particularly crucial amid ongoing security challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC).

The appointment of Lt Gen Raja Subramani as CDS comes at a pivotal moment for India, as the country advances its defence modernization and joint military integration initiatives. In his role as CDS, he is expected to enhance collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, drive theatre command reforms, oversee military modernization efforts, and provide strategic military counsel to the government. His extensive operational and strategic experience positions him well to contribute significantly to India’s ongoing military transformation and national security goals.
