The Government of India has announced two major appointments in the country’s top military leadership positions. Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani (Retd) has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), while Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). These appointments were officially announced by the Ministry of Defence on 9 May 2026.

Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Appointed as Chief of Defence Staff

The Government has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff. He will also serve as the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs. The current CDS, General Anil Chauhan, will complete his tenure on 30 May 2026.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani is currently serving as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025. Before this assignment, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025 and also held the position of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. During his distinguished military career of over four decades, he commanded several important formations including infantry brigades, mountain divisions, and the prestigious 2 Corps on the western front.

He has also served in important staff and instructional appointments such as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, Chief Instructor at Defence Services Staff College, and Chief of Staff at Northern Command. For his exceptional service, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Appointed as Navy Chief

The Government has also appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff. The current Navy Chief, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, will retire on 31 May 2026.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan is currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987 and is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare.

He is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has received advanced training from prestigious institutions in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Throughout his naval career, he has commanded several important warships and naval formations, including INS Vidyut, INS Kulish, INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

The Admiral has held key operational and administrative positions such as Chief Staff Officer (Training), Flag Officer Sea Training, Commander of the Western Fleet, and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. He holds multiple academic qualifications, including degrees in Defence Studies, Strategic Studies, and International Studies.

Strengthening India’s Defence Leadership

These high-level appointments reflect the Government’s focus on experienced leadership in the armed forces during a period of evolving regional and global security challenges. Both officers bring decades of operational experience, strategic expertise, and leadership to their new responsibilities.

The appointments are expected to further strengthen India’s military modernization, jointness among the armed forces, and national security framework in the coming years.
