World Turtle Day 2026
World Turtle Day is observed every year on 23 May to spread awareness about the protection and conservation of turtles and tortoises, which are among the oldest living creatures on Earth. These reptiles have existed for more than 200 million years and survived even the age of dinosaurs. Despite their long survival history, turtles and tortoises today face serious threats due to habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade.
The day was founded in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting turtles and tortoises around the world. World Turtle Day encourages people to take steps towards preserving these species and their natural habitats.
Turtles play an important role in maintaining ecological balance in oceans, rivers, and forests. However, increasing human activities such as plastic pollution, coastal development, and poaching have reduced their population in many regions. Conservationists across the world are working to protect nesting sites, reduce marine pollution, and create awareness about wildlife protection.
The observance of World Turtle Day also highlights the need for sustainable environmental practices and stronger wildlife conservation laws. Schools, environmental groups, and wildlife organizations conduct campaigns, educational programs, and awareness drives to encourage people to protect these ancient reptiles for future generations.
Chandrayaan-3 Wins Prestigious 2026 AIAA Goddard Award
India achieved another milestone in space exploration as the Indian Space Research Organisation mission Chandrayaan-3 received the prestigious 2026 AIAA Goddard Astronautics Award in Washington DC. The award recognizes the remarkable achievement of India becoming the first country to successfully soft-land a spacecraft near the Moon’s south pole.
The award was presented by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics on 21 May 2026. India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, accepted the honour on behalf of ISRO.
Chandrayaan-3 created history on 23 August when India successfully achieved a soft landing near the lunar south pole, a region that had never been explored directly on the Moon’s surface before. This accomplishment strengthened India’s position as a leading space power and earned worldwide appreciation from the scientific community.
The Moon’s south pole is considered highly important because scientists believe it may contain water ice, valuable minerals, and other resources useful for future lunar missions. The region may also provide suitable conditions for establishing future exploration bases. Chandrayaan-3’s successful mission has opened new opportunities for scientific research and international cooperation in lunar exploration.
New Delhi Hosts 68th APO Governing Body Meeting
India hosted the 68th Session of the Asian Productivity Organization Governing Body from 20 to 22 May 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The meeting brought together policymakers, experts, and delegates from countries across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss productivity-driven economic growth and regional cooperation.
The summit served as the highest decision-making platform of the Asian Productivity Organization. Discussions during the meeting focused on reviewing the APO Vision 2030 framework, which aims to promote productivity-led transformation and sustainable economic development among member countries.
Delegates also discussed budget planning for the 2027–28 period to strengthen regional productivity programs and institutional activities. Another major agenda item included reviewing reforms related to the election procedures for the Secretary-General of the organization.

India Delays First International Big Cat Alliance Summit
India has postponed the inaugural summit of the International Big Cat Alliance, which was originally scheduled to be held in New Delhi on 1 June 2026. The decision was taken after the rescheduling of the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit to ensure broader international participation, especially from African countries that are important for global big cat conservation.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the decision followed consultations with the African Union leadership and the African Union Commission. The objective is to ensure stronger participation from countries that are home to major big cat populations and to strengthen multilateral cooperation in wildlife conservation.
African nations play a vital role in protecting species such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Their participation is considered essential for the success of the alliance and for creating global conservation strategies.
The International Big Cat Alliance was launched in 2023 and later approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024. The alliance focuses on the conservation of seven major big cat species, including the tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma.
On 22 May 2026, Saudi Arabia became the newest member of the alliance, increasing its membership to 26 countries along with five observer nations. The alliance reflects India’s efforts to promote international cooperation for wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation.
Department of Space Approves Space Facilities in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat
The Department of Space approved the establishment of Common Technical Facilities in the states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat on 22 May 2026. These facilities are aimed at strengthening India’s private-sector space manufacturing ecosystem with support from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
Common Technical Facilities are specialized shared engineering hubs designed for testing, validation, and integration of space hardware. These centres will support startups and industries that require advanced infrastructure for rocket and satellite testing.
A major Space Manufacturing Park will be developed at Khoraj near Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The park will focus on spacecraft manufacturing, payload systems, structural assembly, and electronic validation. Payload systems refer to the scientific instruments and equipment carried by spacecraft for specific missions.
The central government has sanctioned ₹100 crore for a specialized facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. State governments will provide land, buildings, and civic infrastructure, while IN-SPACe will manage the procurement, installation, and initial operation of technical systems before transferring them to the states.
The initiative reflects India’s growing focus on promoting private participation in the space sector and building advanced infrastructure to support future space missions and manufacturing activities.
