A tragic incident unfolded at Tiger Point in Lonavala on Thursday, claiming the life of Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO II) Rakesh Kumar Mishra, a 49-year-old personnel of the Indian Navy stationed at INS Shivaji. The unfortunate event occurred while Mishra was on a video call with a relative, showcasing the scenic views of the clifftop viewpoint.
Mishra, originally from Mangolpuri in North West Delhi, was spending his day off familiarizing himself with the area ahead of a visit from his son and friends the following day. He intended to guide them to the popular tourist spot, known for its breathtaking panoramas.
While capturing the picturesque landscape, Mishra moved near the edge of the cliff, attempting to find a better vantage point. However, he lost his balance and fell approximately 400 feet into the deep valley below. His colleague, Mahendra Singh, who was seated under a nearby tree, heard Mishra’s calls for help but could not reach him due to the steep and hazardous terrain.
Upon realizing the severity of the situation, Singh immediately contacted local authorities. An accidental death report was promptly filed at the Lonavala Rural Police Station. A coordinated response followed, involving local police, forensic experts, members of the Shivdurg Rescue Team, staff from INS Shivaji, and the Maval Disaster Management Team.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the challenging conditions of the gorge, but teams utilized ropes and stretchers to navigate the descent. By Thursday evening, they successfully recovered Mishra’s body, which was then transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival at around 6:30 p.m. A post-mortem examination was conducted thereafter.
Authorities are treating the incident as an accident, with no indications of foul play. Investigating officers are meticulously examining the circumstances surrounding the fall, including the safety features of the viewpoint.
This tragic occurrence serves as a somber reminder of the potential hazards present at unguarded cliff faces in tourist areas, particularly in the Western Ghats. Local officials are urging visitors to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and exercise extreme caution when exploring these beautiful yet perilous locations.
Rakesh Kumar Mishra was a respected senior non-commissioned officer with a commendable record at INS Shivaji. His untimely passing has resonated throughout the naval community and among the residents of Lonavala, who are mourning the loss of a dedicated individual.
