World Crocodile Day 2026
World Crocodile Day is observed every year on 17 June to promote awareness about crocodilians and the need to conserve their natural habitats. The day focuses on protecting species such as crocodiles, gharials, alligators, and caimans, which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance in aquatic environments.
The theme for World Crocodile Day 2026 is “Legacy in Every Scale.” This theme highlights the extraordinary evolutionary journey of crocodilians, a group of reptiles that has survived on Earth for over 200 million years. Their resilience and ecological significance make their conservation an important global priority.
India has undertaken several initiatives to safeguard crocodilian species. These include scientific population monitoring, habitat restoration, nest protection programs, public awareness campaigns, and wetland conservation measures. The legal framework provided by the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 has further strengthened efforts to preserve these ancient reptiles and their ecosystems.
