Operation Lancer
The Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Command once again demonstrated its high level of operational preparedness by successfully carrying out Operation Lancer, a mission launched to rescue the distressed merchant vessel MV Pyra near Great Nicobar Island. The rescue mission began after the A&N Command received a distress call from MV Pyra, which had suffered a propulsion failure and was drifting dangerously in the waters near Great Nicobar Island. Responding without delay, the A&N Command launched a coordinated rescue operation by deploying ships of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, supported by three tugboats. Through effective coordination and timely action, the rescue teams safely brought the vessel under control and anchored it within India’s territorial waters, preventing a potential maritime emergency.

Indigenous ‘Bhargavastra’ Counter-Drone System Advances Towards Final Trials
India’s indigenous defence technology has taken another important step forward with the continued development of the ‘Bhargavastra’ Counter-Drone System. According to Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), the system is expected to complete its internal trials within the next few months, bringing it closer to operational deployment.
The vehicle-mounted, multi-layered counter-drone system was recently demonstrated in Nagpur, where it showcased its capability to detect, track, and neutralize multiple drone threats. The demonstration highlighted India’s progress in developing advanced indigenous technologies to counter the growing challenge posed by unmanned aerial systems.
The system features an advanced Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (C4I) architecture integrated with radar, Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensors, and passive radio frequency detectors. Together, these technologies enable rapid identification and engagement of hostile drones.
The radar is capable of detecting aerial threats up to 10 kilometres, while the Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS) can monitor targets up to 6 kilometres, exceeding the current operational requirements of the Indian Army. The project is expected to serve as the technological foundation for the proposed “Sudarshan Chakra” Air Defence System, targeted for development by 2030.
