India has taken another step towards defence self-reliance with the reported test-firing of the first fully indigenised AK-203 “Sher” assault rifle at the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.
AK-203 “Sher” Achieves Indigenous Milestone
From Russian Technology to Indian Manufacturing
India entered into an agreement with Russia in 2019 to manufacture AK-203 rifles domestically. IRRPL was subsequently established as the joint venture responsible for production at Korwa.
The initial rifles supplied to the Indian Army from 2024 were manufactured using imported knock-down kits. Over the years, Indian content was progressively increased. The latest achievement marks the transition from domestic assembly to 100% localisation, according to the company.
This transformation required the development of an Indian supplier ecosystem capable of producing components according to military specifications.
Why Is the “Sher” Important?
The AK-203 “Sher” represents more than just a new rifle. It demonstrates India’s growing capability to manufacture complex defence equipment using domestic supply chains.
The rifle has approximately 50 major components, nearly 180 sub-components and around 120 manufacturing processes. Localising each of these elements required the development of new Indian vendors, manufacturing processes, testing facilities and quality-control systems.
The Russian partners provided the complete transfer of technology during 2023–24, after which Indian industry continued developing the domestic production ecosystem.
AK-203 “Sher” Undergoes Firing Trials
The indigenous rifle has successfully completed firing trials at the Korwa facility, including automatic and burst firing.
The next important stage will be Indian Army user trials. According to the report, several “Sher” rifles are expected to be manufactured and handed over for these trials by September 2026.
These trials will help evaluate the weapon under broader operational and field conditions before it progresses towards full-scale production.
Key Features of AK-203
The AK-203 is a gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle chambered for the 7.62×39 mm cartridge. It belongs to the Kalashnikov AK-100 family.
The rifle incorporates several modern features, including:
- Folding and adjustable stock
- Ergonomic grip
- Rail system for mounting optical and other accessories
- 7.62×39 mm ammunition
- Modernised Kalashnikov design
The weapon is intended to eventually replace the INSAS rifle in the Indian Army.
Huge Production Target
The AK-203 programme is also significant because of its scale. IRRPL has a contract to manufacture 6,01,427 rifles under a deal worth approximately ₹5,200 crore.
The production deadline has reportedly been advanced from October 2032 to December 2030. To meet the revised schedule, the Korwa facility would need to manufacture approximately 600 rifles per day, or roughly one rifle every 100 seconds.
Building an Indian Defence Supply Chain
Achieving complete localisation required Indian companies to develop several specialised components, including:
- Barrels
- Bolts
- Furniture
- Coatings
- Fire-control components
Alongside manufacturing, India also had to establish indigenous testing and proofing capabilities to ensure that the components meet military standards.
This is particularly important because defence self-reliance is not simply about assembling a weapon domestically. A genuinely resilient defence ecosystem requires domestic capability across design, components, manufacturing, testing, quality control and maintenance.
Who Manufactures the AK-203 in India?
The AK-203 is manufactured by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL).
The joint venture involves Indian companies Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL), along with Russia’s Kalashnikov Concern and Rosoboronexport, both associated with Rostec.
AK-203 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The fully indigenous “Sher” fits into India’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence manufacturing strategy.
The significance of the programme lies in the gradual transformation of a rifle originally based on Russian technology into a weapon manufactured through an entirely Indian supply chain.
It can also strengthen India’s defence industrial base by creating opportunities for domestic suppliers and specialised manufacturers.

The completion of firing trials is an important milestone, but the process is not over. The Indian Army’s user trials will be the next crucial step.
