India Develops BrahMos Belt Strategy
The concept of a “BrahMos Belt” refers to a proposed network of coastal supersonic cruise missile systems that could strengthen maritime defence capabilities among Southeast Asian countries around the South China Sea.
The BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India and Russia through BrahMos Aerospace. It is named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers and is recognised for its high-speed flight, sea-skimming capability and rapid terminal attack profile.
India has already exported the shore-based version of the missile to the Philippines under a $375 million contract. The Philippines has received BrahMos coastal missile batteries, while Vietnam and Indonesia have also been associated with discussions concerning possible procurement.
India and Russia are working on further improvements to the BrahMos system to enhance its operational capabilities and international export potential. The missile remains an important example of successful India-Russia defence co-development.
India is also strengthening defence diplomacy to support defence exports. The government has increased the defence-diplomacy allocation to ₹400 crore for 2025–26 and aims to expand the number of defence wings in Indian missions abroad to 85–90 by 2030.

Raksha Mantri Meets Sri Lankan Prime Minister in Colombo
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo on September 9, 2026, during his visit to Sri Lanka.
The discussions covered several areas of bilateral cooperation, with development cooperation receiving particular attention. The two leaders also reviewed cooperation in sectors including education, information technology, infrastructure, innovation and research.
The meeting highlighted the longstanding civilisational relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Both sides emphasised the importance of strong people-to-people connections in maintaining the close relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
Rajnath Singh described India and Sri Lanka as sister democracies with shared heritage and stressed the need to pursue a common developmental vision aimed at regional peace, prosperity and the welfare of their people.
He also praised Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya as a symbol of women’s empowerment and Nari Shakti, describing her leadership as an inspiration for women in both Sri Lanka and India.

Adani Defence Signs Five-Year Agreement for AK-203 Ammunition
Adani Defence & Aerospace has entered into a five-year agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) to supply indigenously produced 7.62×39 mm ammunition for AK-203 assault rifles manufactured in India.
The agreement aims to create a more integrated domestic supply chain for the India-Russia AK-203 rifle programme. It links Indian rifle manufacturing with locally produced ammunition, strengthening domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.
IRRPL was established in 2019 under an India-Russia intergovernmental arrangement for manufacturing AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. Its manufacturing facility is located at Korwa in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.
The joint venture includes Indian entities Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd and Munitions India Ltd, along with Russian companies Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport.
In December 2021, the government signed a contract with IRRPL for the manufacture of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles at the Korwa facility.
Adani Defence has also developed small-calibre ammunition manufacturing capabilities in India, including a dedicated facility in Kanpur. The latest agreement is expected to strengthen India’s domestic small-arms supply chain and support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective in defence production.

Andhra Pradesh Clears ₹8,000 Crore Warship Building Hub
Andhra Pradesh has approved a major defence shipbuilding project at Machilipatnam, marking an important expansion of India’s naval manufacturing infrastructure.
The project will be led by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), which plans to invest approximately ₹8,000 crore in the new facility. This will be a significant expansion for the defence public sector undertaking, as it will establish a manufacturing facility outside its traditional base in Goa.
The State Investment Promotion Committee has approved the project, with around 400 acres of land expected to be allotted in two phases.
Preparatory activities are scheduled to include environmental impact assessments and preparation of a detailed project report. Machinery installation is planned to begin in October next year, while trial production is expected by January 2028.
Goa Shipyard began discussions with the Andhra Pradesh government in early 2025. An MoU was subsequently signed at the CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam in November 2025.
The project’s proposed investment was initially estimated at ₹1,500 crore but was later expanded to ₹8,000 crore, reflecting its growing strategic and industrial significance.

India and Bangladesh Strengthen Defence Cooperation
India and Bangladesh have renewed their focus on strengthening defence and strategic cooperation, with recent discussions covering military training, capacity building, shared security interests and regional stability.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s defence adviser, Brigadier (Retd.) Shamsul Islam. The discussions focused on enhancing professional cooperation between the armed forces of the two neighbouring countries.
According to Bangladesh’s Inter Services Public Relations directorate, India reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation with Bangladesh in areas such as capacity building, professional military engagement and common security concerns.
The two sides also discussed joint training programmes, exchanges of experience among military personnel, disaster management, regional peace and maritime security.
