World Rhino Day 2026
World Rhino Day 2026 is observed on 22 September 2026 to raise global awareness about the conservation of the world’s five surviving rhinoceros species.
The observance highlights major threats to rhinos, including poaching, illegal rhino-horn trade and habitat loss, while also recognizing conservation efforts undertaken around the world.
The official theme of World Rhino Day 2026 is “Keep the Five Alive”. The theme focuses on securing viable rhino populations and protecting their habitats over the long term.
World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010. In 2011, conservation advocates Lisa Jane Campbell and Rhishja Cota helped develop it into an international observance covering both African and Asian rhino species.
There are only five surviving rhino species in the world. Two are found naturally in Africa and three in Asia:

The Greater One-Horned Rhino is found primarily in India and Nepal. Its population had declined to around 200 animals at the beginning of the 20th century, but conservation and protection measures have helped the population recover to more than 4,000 today.
In India, Assam is particularly important for rhino conservation. The species is strongly associated with protected areas such as Kaziranga National Park, while conservation efforts also extend to other protected landscapes.
11th Ayurveda Day 2026
India will observe the 11th Ayurveda Day on 23 September 2026, celebrating the country’s more than 5,000-year-old system of traditional medicine and its increasing integration with modern healthcare.
The theme for Ayurveda Day 2026 is:
“Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow”
(स्वस्थ भविष्य के लिए आयुर्वेद)
The government now observes 23 September every year as Ayurveda Day, aligning the observance with the autumnal equinox, which symbolizes the principle of balance associated with Ayurveda.
The word Ayurveda is derived from:
- Ayu – Life
- Veda – Science
Its origins can be traced to the Rigveda, while classical Ayurvedic knowledge is also documented in texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.
The government is expanding Ayurveda and other Ayush services through the National Ayush Mission (NAM) and National Health Mission (NHM). Between 2014-15 and 2025-26, the Centre released more than ₹6,406.99 crore to States and Union Territories under NAM.
Ayurveda has also gained greater international standardisation through its inclusion in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) module.
This enables clinicians to record Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) diagnoses using standardized codes. It can also facilitate research, policymaking and the processing of insurance claims for Ayush treatments.
The Studentship Programme for Ayurveda Research Ken (SPARK) aims to develop research aptitude among undergraduate Ayurveda students by supporting short-term research projects. Between 2022-23 and 2024-25, 289 Ayurveda colleges benefited from the programme.
Angh: Nagaland Film Wins Platform Prize at TIFF
Theja Rio, a filmmaker from Nagaland, India, won the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026 for his film Angh.
The achievement is an important milestone for Naga and Indian cinema.
Angh is a Konyak-language film and was among the 12 films selected for the competitive Platform Programme at TIFF.
The Platform Prize comes with a guaranteed entry into Oscar contention for the 2026 Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category under a newly introduced route.
The film is set in the Nagaland region of northeastern India during the early 1960s. It is filmed in the Konyak language.
The story revolves around a former village chief and his young son, who live in one of the few remaining communities following an ancient tradition of life.
While Angh is one of the Indian films connected with the 2027 Oscars, another Marathi film, Gondhal, directed by Santosh Davakhar, was selected as India’s official entry through the conventional country-selection process.
Mark Wood Retires from International Cricket
England fast bowler Mark Wood announced his retirement from international cricket on 22 September 2026, bringing an end to an 11-year international career.

President Amends Inter-State Council Order, 1990
President Droupadi Murmu has amended the Inter-State Council Order of 1990, introducing special conditions for the participation of the Governor/Lieutenant Governor in Inter-State Council meetings.
The Inter-State Council (Amendment) Order 2026 was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 9 September 2026 under Article 263 of the Constitution and came into effect from the date of issue.

The Inter-State Council is a constitutional body provided for under Article 263 through the Inter-State Council Order of 1990.
The initial order was issued in the Gazette of India on 28 May 1990. It was subsequently amended in July 1990 and December 1996.
Government Dissolves Digital Communications Commission
The Government of India has dissolved the Digital Communications Commission (DCC), the apex inter-departmental decision-making body under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
The move brings an end to an institution that had functioned for nearly 37 years, first as the Telecom Commission and later as the Digital Communications Commission.
The Union Cabinet approved the winding up of the Commission on 16 September 2026, while the dissolution took effect following the publication of a government resolution dated 19 September 2026.
The institution was originally established in April 1989 as the Telecom Commission. For decades, it served as an important institutional mechanism for policy formulation and administrative decision-making in India’s telecommunications sector.
One of the factors behind the decision was an overlap between the Commission’s membership and departmental advisers within the Department of Telecommunications.
The government viewed this arrangement as involving duplication in the decision-making structure. Vacancies in important DCC posts also formed part of the administrative context surrounding the decision.
The Commission had vacant member posts at the time of its dissolution, while its finance member was scheduled to retire in February 2027.
In addition, the Finance Ministry already exercised budget approval authority for relevant matters, further reducing the need for a separate layer of decision-making.
The DCC functioned as an apex body dealing with policy and administrative issues related to India’s telecommunications and digital communications sectors. Its structure included senior DoT officials and departmental advisers and also provided for financial oversight.
7th National Formulary of India 2026
The 7th edition of the National Formulary of India (NFI) 2026 was launched on 21 September 2026 at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
