A late-night complaint in Doraha has led to the arrest of a Punjab Home Guard jawan after allegations that he dressed like an IPS officer, intimidated workers at a roadside dhaba and behaved aggressively with people present there.
Who Has Been Arrested
The accused has been identified as Amarjit Singh, a 55-year-old married resident of Maloud (Chomon village) in Payal tehsil, Ludhiana district. He was recently moved from jail duty to the Government Railway Police (GRP) and was posted at Doraha railway station.
What Happened at the Dhaba
As per police and CCTV footage, the incident took place late on Friday night at 3-J dhaba on the National Highway (GT Road) in Doraha. Amarjit Singh reportedly reached the spot in uniform with IPS badges and questioned the staff about the dhaba being open at that hour. When an employee tried to explain, he allegedly claimed to be a senior IPS officer, used abusive language, manhandled one employee and another staff member, and threatened action if the dhaba was not shut immediately. Police also say he misbehaved with customers who were there at the time.
Reports further state that he arrived on a Bullet motorcycle. Some accounts also claim he had a custom-sewn IPS-style uniform and had earlier been seen in the area wearing it while allegedly intimidating locals and shopkeepers.
Police Response and Legal Action
Doraha police arrested him after receiving the complaint. Station House Officer Jashanpreet Singh confirmed that verification of the man’s credentials showed he was a Punjab Home Guard employee posted locally. Police recovered the fake IPS uniform and badges, and are questioning him about the source of the insignia and whether he had previously impersonated an IPS officer or cheated members of the public.
A case has been registered under Sections 204 (personating a public servant), 205 (wearing garb or carrying token used by a public servant with fraudulent intent), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
SHO Jashanpreet Singh also said that the accused is not in a stable state of mind and is taking antidepressants.
Ongoing Probe
The investigation, being supervised at the level of Khanna SSP Dr. Darpan Ahluwalia, is continuing to establish the complete sequence of events, the origin of the uniform and badges, and whether there was any earlier similar conduct. Police have so far confirmed the arrest and the recovery of the fake insignia, while allegations about prior impersonation remain under investigation.
The case has raised concerns about unauthorised use of official insignia and the need for quick verification of identity by local police when such complaints are reported.
