Nation Celebrates 73rd Republic Day

  • The Nation celebrates 73rd Republic Day. The main function will be held at Rajpath in the National Capital where President Ram Nath Kovind will take the salute of the parade.
  • Republic Day is a national holiday in India, when the country marks and celebrates the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26, January 1950, replacing the Government of India Act as the governing document of India and thus, turning the nation into a newly formed republic.
  • The celebrations this year are special as Republic Day falls in the 75th year of Independence, being celebrated as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ across the country.

Awards & Honours @ Republic Day

  • President’s Police Medal awarded for Distinguished and Meritorious Services to the RPF/RPSF personnel. Principal Chief Security Commissioner, N.E. Railway gets President’s Police Medal (PPM) for Distinguished Service.
  • Award of Gallantry Medals / Service Medals along with Correctional Service Medals on prison personnel to be given.
  • 29 officers and staff of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs get Presidential Awards on eve of Republic Day.
  • The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2021 on 51 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 06, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 16, and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 29 persons. Five awardees are  posthumous.
  • The Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for the meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person.  The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak.  Persons of all walks of life are eligible for these awards.  The award can also be conferred posthumously.

Padma Awards 2022

  • Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  • The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
  • The awards are announced on Republic Day every year.
  • These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.
  • This year the President has approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one) as per the list. The list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 107 Padma Shri Awards. 
  • 34 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 Posthumous awardees.
  • Ms. Prabha Atre, Shri Radheyshyam Khemka (Posthumous), General Bipin Rawat (Posthumous), Shri Kalyan Singh (Posthumous) are awarded “Padma Vibhushan”.
  • Ghulam Nabi Azad, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Shri Krishna Ella, and Smt. Suchitra Ella* (Duo), Devendra Jhajharia, Satya Narayana Nadella, Sundararajan Pichai, Cyrus Poonawalla, etc were awarded “Padma Bhushan”.
  • Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Olympians Pramod Bhagat, Vandana Kataria, singer Sonu Nigam, etc were awarded “Padma Sri”.

Burkina Faso Military Coup

  • Burkina Faso’s army announced that it had ousted President Roch Kabore, suspended the constitution, dissolved the government and the national assembly, and closed the country’s borders.
  • A former French colony, Burkina Faso has suffered chronic instability since gaining independence in 1960, including several coups.
  • The country’s name, meaning “land of the honest men”, was picked by revolutionary military officer Thomas Sankara who took power in 1983. He was toppled and killed in 1987.
  • Army has toppled governments over the past 18 months in Mali and Guinea.
  • The military also took over in Chad last year (2021) after President Idriss Deby died fighting rebels on the battlefield in the country’s north.

Himachal Pradesh’s Statehood Day Celebrated

  • Himachal Pradesh is a state in North India. Bordering Tibet, it is noted for its Himalayan landscapes (Himachal Pradesh means ‘snow-laden region’) and is a popular tourist destination for trekking and enjoying the natural beauty. It also has the fourth-highest per capita income for the Indian States and is the third fastest growing economy in India.
  • Following independence from Britain in 1947, Himachal Pradesh was created as a province on April 15th, 1948. This event is celebrated with a public holiday of its own – Himachal Day.
  • In 1950 it became a sub-state under the Indian constitution then became a union territory in 1956.
  • On December 18th, 1970, the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on January 25th, 1971, making it the 18th state of India. Y.S. Parmar became the state’s first chief minister.
  • Between its creation in 1948 and statehood in 1971, Himachal Pradesh also changed its boundaries several times, incorporating smaller districts in the region.

National Level Conference on Beekeeping Sector

  • National Bee Board (NBB) organized a National Conference on Beekeeping Sector in collaboration with National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED), Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) & National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
  • More than 600 participants from Government as well as the private sector, State Agricultural Universities (SAUs)/ Central Agricultural Universities (CAUs), Beekeepers and other stakeholders involved in beekeeping occupation, etc. attended the conference.
  • National Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) aims to create a network of honey testing labs covering all parts of the country.
  • NAFED is creating 65 FPOs of beekeepers/ Honey Processors.
  • The implementation of NBHM will be proven a huge step in achieving the “Sweet Revolution” in the country.

National Tourism Day Celebrated

  • Every year National Tourism Day is celebrated across the country on January 25 to recognize India’s magnificence and spread awareness about the significance of tourism and its impact on the economy.
  • It was the year 1948 when a tourism traffic committee was first begun in India to promote tourism culture in the nation. In 1958, a tourism department was established under the Ministry of Tourism and Communication in India. For many years, the government has been taking steps to help the tourism of the country grow. However, the exact year when the National Tourism Day was first started is not known.
  • The ministry of tourism is observing National Tourism Day under the aegis of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, a 75-week grand celebration to mark 75 years of India’s independence. This year’s theme for National Tourism Day is ‘Rural and Community Centric Tourism’.

India, Israel Marks 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Ties

  • India and Israel have launched a commemorative logo to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The logo was unveiled virtually yesterday at an online event in the presence of Ambassador of Israel to India Naor Gilon and Indian envoy to Israel, Sanjeev Singla. 
  • The logo features the Star of David and the Ashoka Chakra- the two symbols that adorn the national flags of both countries- and forms the numeral 30 depicting the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations. This special logo symbolizes the strong friendship, love, and admiration that exists between the people of the two nations. It also depicts the growing strategic partnership between the two sides.
  • Israel and India established diplomatic relations on the 29th of January 1992.
  • The 30th anniversary of relations between Israel and India will be marked throughout the year with an elaborate array of cultural events.
