Indian Navy Decommissions INS Gomati After 34 Years of Service

  • The Indian Navy on Saturday decommissioned the INS Gomati, a Godavari class guided-missile frigate, after 34 years of service
  • The ship, which had been deployed in Operations Cactus, Parakram and Rainbow, was decommissioned at sunset at the Naval Dockyard.
  • Gomati was designed by the Indian Navy and built in an Indian shipyard, and these were initial steps towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), said Vice Admiral, Flag Officer-in-Command, Western Naval Command Ajendra Bahadur Singh.
  • Gomati’s legacy will be kept alive in an open-air museum being set up on the banks of the Gomti river (from which the frigate derives her name) in Lucknow where several of her combat systems will be displayed as military and war relics.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government and Indian Navy have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding for this purpose, Singh added.
  • The present INS Gomati was commissioned on April 16, 1988, by then defence minister K C Pant at the Mazgaon Dock.
  • The ship was twice awarded the coveted Unit Citation, once in 2007-08 and in 2019-20.
  • The earliest avatar of INS Gomati was decommissioned in 1979.

Convocation ceremony of NDA’s 142nd course

  • Following the convocation ceremony of the cadets of the 142nd course of the National Defence Academy (NDA) on Sunday, the Passing out Parade took place in Pune on Monday morning. This comes as a mark of completion of the professional training of the cadets at the academy after three years of tough training.
    • The Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari also reviewed the parade on the ground following which he addressed the cadets. Notably, the parade was held at the Khetrapal Ground in Pune. MOD Cracks Down As Foreign Firms Default On Offsets

  • Notices have been sent to overseas companies bagging major military contracts but failing to undertake mandatory investments of at least 30% into the Indian defence and aerospace sector.
  • Data available with the defence ministry shows that in the past five years, foreign companies have failed to perform offsets worth over $2.24 billion, even in cases where multiple extensions were given on special request.
  • The defence ministry has already imposed fines worth $43.14 million against erring companies, with the amount expected to rise exponentially over the coming months.
  • Initiated in 2008, the offset policy mandates foreign companies outsourcing at least 30% of the value of large contracts to Indian manufacturers. The offsets route was estimated to bring in $11.2 billion over the 2008-2024 period but till now, just over 20% of these have been fulfilled.

  • These details have emerged in the first report compiled by the monitoring team of the 1988 UNSC Taliban sanctions committee after the Taliban captured power.
  • At present, the group is said to have established three camps in Kunar and Nangarhar. Also, the report has noted that ex-LeT members like Aslam Farooqi and Ejaz Ahmad Ahangar, also known as Abu Usman al-Kashmiri, have joined ISIL-K, which is now targeting the Taliban.
