International Day Of UN Peacekeepers

  • The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, May 29, is “an international day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.“
  • It was so designated by United Nations General Assembly Resolution, on December 11, 2002, after an official request of the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association and the Government of Ukraine to the UN General Assembly and was first celebrated in 2003.
  • The date, May 29, marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948 to monitor the ceasefire after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which was the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission.
  • This year, the United Nations will mark the occasion under the theme, “People Peace Progress: The Power of Partnerships”.

World No Tobacco Day

  • World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May.
  • This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of tobacco, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
  • The Member States of the WHO created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.
  • The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million as the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
  • The day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.

V D Savarkar Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (28 May 1883 – 26 February 1966), was an Indian politician, activist, and writer.
  • He developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while imprisoned at Ratnagiri in 1922.
  • He was a leading figure in the Hindu Mahasabha.
  • Savarkar joined the Hindu Mahasabha and popularized the term Hindutva (Hinduness), previously coined by Chandranath Basu, to create a collective “Hindu” identity as an essence of Bharat (India).

Govt Launches Indian Business Portal

  • Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel launched the Indian Business Portal in New Delhi.
  • The portal will serve as an international trade hub for Indian exporters and foreign buyers.
  • The portal is a business to business digital marketplace to empower small medium enterprises exporters, artisans and farmers to identify new markets for their products and grow their sales globally.
  • Speaking after launching the portal, Ms Patel said, the portal will act as e-commerce marketplace to help Indian exporters get global visibility.
  • She said, it will address a number of elements which are part of the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a commitment of the government like digitizing exporters, supporting MSME and encouraging greater exports of Indian products.
  • Indian Business Portal has been developed by Federation of Indian Export Organisations to provide Indian Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) exporters, artisans and farmers, and foreign buyers a business to business marketplace on a single digital window.

‘Arogya Manthan’ Inaugurated By President Kovind

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has said that the more we stay in touch with nature, the healthier we will be.
  • Speaking on the topic ‘One Nation, One Health, the need of hour’, in the ‘Arogya Manthan’ programme organized by Arogya Bharti in Bhopal, the President advised citizens to adopt routine, ethics and food according to nature in daily life.
  • Referring to the usefulness of traditional medicine, Mr Kovind said that these systems of medicine are being adopted globally. He clarified that any medical system is not specific to any religion, but it is meant to keep the entire human race healthy.
  • Appreciating the idea of One Nation, One Health system, the President said that it is clear from ancient texts like ‘Yoga Sutra’, ‘Hatha Yoga Pradipika’, ‘Hiranya Samhita’ that centuries ago our country had One Nation, One Health system existed in some form.

Fake Reviews On E-commerce Websites

  • The Centre will develop a framework to keep check over fake reviews on E-Commerce websites. The Department of Consumer Affairs will develop these frameworks after studying the present mechanism and best practices available globally. The Department held a meeting with stakeholders to discuss issues arising due to fake and deceptive online reviews. Since e-commerce involves a virtual shopping experience without any opportunity to physically view or examine the product, consumers heavily rely on reviews posted on e-commerce platforms to see the opinion and experience of users who have already purchased the goods and services.
  • Secretary of Department of Consumer Affairs Rohit Kumar Singh said, the traceability by ensuring the authenticity of the reviewer and the associated liability of the platform are the two key issues. He added that e-com players must disclose as to how they choose the most relevant reviews for display in a fair and transparent manner.
  • During the meeting, all stakeholders agreed that the issue deserves to be monitored closely and an appropriate framework governing the fake reviews may be developed to address the issue for protection of consumer interest. Stakeholders from e-commerce companies claimed that they have frameworks in place by which they monitor fake reviews and would be pleased to take part in developing a legal framework on the issue.

India Tops ISSF Junior World Cup 2022

  • Indian shooters concluded their campaign on top with a total of 33 medals at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022 in Suhl, Germany this week.
  • India’s tally of 33 medals – 13 golds, 15 silvers and five bronzes – was the most by any country at the 2022 edition. Italy – with four golds two silver and five bronze medals – finished second on the table.
  • At the last edition of the ISSF Junior World Cup in 2021, India had 43 medals – 17 golds, 16 silvers and 10 bronzes – to top the medals table.

Gujarat Titans Win IPL Title In Debut Season

  • Debutants Gujarat Titans have crowned the Indian Premier League (IPL) champions after they beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final in Ahmedabad On 29 May 2022.
  • Indian Premier League was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.
  • There have been fifteen seasons of the IPL tournament. The current IPL title holder franchise is Gujarat Titans, winning the 2022 season.
