MoD Resolves Tussle Between Army and DRDO Over Zoravar Light Tank Program

- It has been decided now that Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) located at Avadi in Chennai will get to manufacture the first 59 of the 354 light tanks and the rest 295 tanks will be manufactured by a Private sector company after the delivery of the first lot by the DRDO.

ISRO & JSIIC IDS Have Jointly Conducted Hypersonic Vehicle Trials
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday successfully conducted a joint hypersonic vehicle trial along with the Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).
- According to the country’s premier space research agency, the joint hypersonic vehicle trial matched with the predetermined targets.
What is a hypersonic vehicle?
- A hypersonic vehicle can be an airplane, missile, or spacecraft that has the ability to travel five times faster than the speed of sound, or greater than Mach 5. It is regarded as a cutting-edge technology, and countries like China, India, Russia, and the United States have been trying to further enhance the ability of their hypersonic weapons.
- The Indian space agency has been developing hypersonic missiles in collaboration with Russia.
- Indian scientists are also working on a project for an indigenous, dual-capable hypersonic cruise missile as part of its Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle program. As per reports, the Indian indigenous missile will have the ability to fire nuclear weapons along with conventional weapons.
UK, Japan, Italy To Develop Next-generation Fighter Jets
- The United Kingdom, Japan and Italy announced Friday they are teaming up to build a sixth-generation fighter jet, designed to rival or eclipse the best warplanes now employed by the likes of China and Russia – and possibly even the United States, the main ally of the trio.
- “We are announcing the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP) – an ambitious endeavour to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft by 2035,” British, Japanese and Italian leaders said in a joint statement.
- The leaders’ statement did not mention China or Russia by name, but said the new fighter jet is needed because “threats and aggression are increasing” against the “rules-based, free and open international order.”
- “Defending our democracy, economy and security, and protecting regional stability, are ever more important,” the leaders said.
- In a separate statement, the British government said development of the new warplane is expected to begin in 2024, and it is expected to be flying by 2035.
- It will showcase technologies from each of the three partners, the British statement said.
- “The ambition is for this to be a next-generation jet enhanced by a network of capabilities such as uncrewed aircraft, advanced sensors, cutting-edge weapons and innovative data systems,” it added.
- The new jet is seen as a replacement for Britain’s Typhoon fighters and Japan’s F-2s.
- The new program will see Britain, Japan and Italy going their own way without the assistance of the US, the world’s preeminent warplane maker.
First Blow Down Test Of Trisonic Wind Tunnel At VSSC
- The first blow down test of the newly realised Trisonic Wind Tunnel was held on 8th December 2022 at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The Trisonic Wind Tunnel is a system to aid aerodynamic design of rockets and re-entry spacecrafts by characterizing a scaled model by evaluating forces, moments, load distribution, unsteady pressures, acoustic levels etc.
- The tunnel can be used for testing various space vehicles in three flight regimes – below the speed of sound, at the speed of sound and above the speed of sound: hence the name trisonic wind tunnel.
- The tunnel can simulate flight conditions from 0.2 times the speed of sound (68 m/s) to 4 times the speed of sound (1360 m/s). The trisonic wind tunnel is a major step towards India’s increasing self-reliance in Aerospace sector.
- The blow down was formally switched on by Shri S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO/Secretary, DOS in presence of senior officials of ISRO including Dr S Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, Dr. V Narayanan, Director, LPSC and Dr D Sam Dayala Dev, Director,IISU.
- The huge structure was built with several hundred tonnes of steel and was implemented through M/s Tata Projects India Ltd Mumbai in association with M/s Aiolos Engineering Corporation, Canada and fully realised by industries across India such as M/s Walchandnagar Industries, Pune, M/s Acoustic India, Tiruchirappalli, M/s Artson Engineering, Nashik, M/s Summits Hygronics, Coimbatore, M/s Hydrocare Fluid Power Systems, Bangalore and M/s Siemens Energy, Ahmedabad.
