Launch Of First MCA Barge Yard 75                            

  • Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge, Yard 75 (LSAM 7) was launched by RAdm Sandeep Mehta, ACWP&A on 24 Feb 23 at Guttenedevi, the launch site of M/s SECON, Visakhapatnam. With all major and auxiliary equipment/systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, this Barge is proud flag bearer of the “Make in India” initiative of the Ministry of Defence.
  • Contract for the construction of 08 x MCA Barge was concluded with M/s SECON, Visakhapatnam, an MSME, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives of the Government of India. This Barge is being built with a service life of 30 years. The availability of MCA Barges will provide impetus to the Operational commitments of IN by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of articles/ammunition to IN Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.

Indian Army Ending Legacy Practices Of Using Buggies, Pipe Bands During Dinners                               

  • In line with PM Narendra Modi’s directions, the Indian Army led by General Manoj Pande has initiated the process to do away with the legacy practices like using horse-driven buggies in functions, pulling out ceremonies on retirement and using pipe bands during dinners.
  • The following shall cease or be discontinued from now on including the use of buggies, pulling out ceremony and using pipers during dinner nights, a formation of the Indian Army issued instructions to the units under it in this regard.
  • The English names of some units, renaming the name of buildings, establishments, roads, parks, an institutions like Auchinleck or Kitchener House are also under review and action has already been taken in this regard in many cases.
  • The document said that the use of buggies in the units or formations for ceremonial functions will be seized, and the horses used for these functions would be made available for training purposes to other formations.
  • As per an official release, the first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) Regiment is raised in the Eastern Command. The Regiment has been equipped with MRSAM Weapon System indigenously developed by DRDO.

IAF’s C-17 Deliveries ALH Mk-III To Mauritius                                  

  • C-17 aircraft of IAF MCC landed in Mauritius with an ALH MK III helicopter to be handed over to the Govt. of Mauritius.
  • This new addition will add to the fleet strength of PHS, thereby redoubling its operational capabilities.
  • The ALH Mk-III helicopters, indigenously manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), feature state-of-the-art equipment including advanced RADAR as well as Electro optical sensors, Shakti engines, full glass cockpit, high-intensity searchlight, advanced communication systems, automatic identification system as well as a search-and-rescue homer. This feature enables the helicopter to undertake maritime reconnaissance as well as carry out search and rescue at extended ranges while operating from ships, both by day and night.
  • Bilateral merchandise trade between India and Mauritius rose to USD 786.72 million in 2021-22 from USD 690.02 million in 2019-20.
  • Both sides agreed to enhance bilateral collaboration to further increase bilateral trade and realize the true potential of the bilateral relationship, especially under the CECPA.

Looking Forward To Continuing To Develop, Foster Relationship With Indian Military: Pentagon       

  • The United States is looking forward to continuing to develop and foster its relationship with the Indian military, the Pentagon has said.
  • “The US and India enjoy a good partnership. We look forward to continuing to develop and foster our relationship with the Indian military,” Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig Gen Pat Ryder.
  • In 1997, defense trade b/w India and the US was almost negligible, today it stands above USD 20 billion.
  • Last month during a press conference, Ryder said that India is a “great example” of countries who are choosing security assistance from the US, underlining that it was ready for any response to wean them away from Russia.
  • India has faced flak from US lawmakers, both Republicans, and Democrats, for choosing to abstain from a UN vote to rebuke Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • US officials have expressed concern over India’s purchase of the S-400 missile systems by Russia.
  • In October 2018, India signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems to ramp up its air defense, despite a warning from the then-Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions.

Indian, and Japanese Troops Share Experience In Unarmed Combat Techniques              

  • The troops of the Indian Army and Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces shared their experience and expertise in sub-conventional operations and unarmed combat techniques during the ongoing joint training in Japan.
  • India-Japan joint training exercise “Dharma Guardian” is being conducted at Camp Imazu in the Shiga province of Japan from February 17 to March 2.
  • It is the fourth edition of the joint military Exercise “Dharma Guardian” between India and Japan.
  • The troops of the Garhwal Rifles Regiment of the Indian Army and an Infantry Regiment from the Middle Army of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) participated in the joint training exercise.
  • During the joint exercise, the armies of the two nations are sharing experiences gained during operations to bolster interoperability in planning and execution.
  • “Notably, in the series of military training exercises undertaken by India with various countries, Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN which is an annual training event with Japan, is crucial and significant in terms of security challenges faced by both nations in the backdrop of the current global situation,” the Ministry of Defence said.
