Indian Air Force New Combat Uniform

Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari gave the first look at what is called a “digitally camouflaged” uniform for the ground staff of the air force. Garud Special Forces of the IAF wear camouflage uniforms like the army.
The Air Force’s new combat uniform is thought to have taken some ideas from the Army’s new digital camouflaged combat uniform, which came out earlier this year.
Most armies around the world have switched to digital camouflage patterns that are hard to spot. Now the designs on the battle fatigues are made up of squares instead of the organic patterns that were used before.
This will make the staff more comfortable and help them do their jobs better. The ergonomic fitting is a feature that helps both men and women on ground duty do their jobs as well as they can.

HAL Begins Manufacturing Of AMCA

India’s state-owned aerospace & defence firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has started manufacturing India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) in association with DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Agency.
The AMCA programme entered a crucial phase with the starting of manufacturing activities. It is noteworthy that, the plan envisages to equip the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy with a 5.5 Generation twin-engine stealth fighter.
Notably, the first two squadrons in AMCA Mark 1 configuration will be powered by an imported engine, another five squadrons with advanced features (Mark 2) will use made-in-India 125-kilonewton engines along with 6th Generation technologies.
AMCA can clock a maximum speed of over 2,600 kilometres per hour (Mach 2.15), along with the combat range of 1,620 km. The fighter will be equipped with 23 mm cannon and will have 14 hardpoints in non-stealth version to carry armaments weighing 6,500 kilograms.
The Critical Design Review (CDR) is expected later this year with the rollout planned in 2024 and first flight planned in 2025.”

Wings India 2022

On the occasion of Wings India 2022, Team Sarang-the brand ambassadors of the, and one of kind four helicopter military display team in the world participated in one of the largest and one of the most successful events on civil aviation.
Wings India 2022, Asia’s largest event on civil aviation, beginning at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad on Thursday. The four-day biennial event is being organised jointly by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Indian Industry (FICCI).
As part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the theme of the event is “India@75: New Horizon for Aviation Industry”. The focus will be on new business acquisition, investments, policy formation, and regional connectivity.
The show will have exhibition, discussions, demonstration, exhibition and flying display by the Sarang team of the Indian Air Force, a roundtable/panel discussion on helicopter industry, business aviation, Krishi UDAN, golden age of drones, India-US Roundtable with AMCHAM, drone demonstrations, Global CEOs Forum, and the Wings India awards 2022 ceremony.

Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ successfully flight-tested

Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’, launched from an indigenously-developed helicopter, was successfully flight-tested at high-altitude ranges on April 11, 2022.
The flight-test was jointly conducted by the teams of scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Army and Indian Air Force, as part of the user validation trials.
The flight trials were conducted from an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and the missile was fired successfully engaging simulated tank target. The missile is guided by an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) operating in the Lock on Before Launch mode. It is one of the most advanced Anti-Tank weapons in the world.

Chinook Undertook The Longest Non-stop Helicopter Sortie In India

An Indian Air Force (IAF) Chinook heavy-lift chopper has created a flying record by completing a non-stop helicopter sortie in India, flying from Chandigarh to Jorhat (Assam).
“The 1910 kilometre route was completed in 7 hours 30 minutes and made possible by the capabilities of Chinook along with operational planning and execution of the IAF,” a spokesperson for Western Air Command of IAF said.
The Chinook is a multi role, vertical lift platform, used for transporting men and material. It also plays an important role in humanitarian and disaster relief operations. “Rapid mobility will allow the IAF to employ this asset optimally as required.”

IAF Readies Bagdogra Airfield For Resumption Of Civil Air Operations

The Indian Air Force has carried out extensive resurfacing work on the runway of Bagdogra airfield enabling civil aircraft to resume operations from the morning of 26 April 2022.
The work was executed with Border Roads Organisation as the implementing agency and was completed expeditiously to facilitate civil aircraft operations with least inconvenience to the airlines and passengers.
Bagdogra is the second busiest airport of West Bengal and is a joint user international airport with a civil terminal attached to the IAF airfield. IAF’s timely completion of the work will enable approximately 8000 air travelers to fly to and from Bagdogra, to various parts of the country, every day.

HAL To Supply 12 Light Utility Helicopters To Armed Forces

HAL has received the Letter of Intent from the Services for the manufacture of 12 LUH, which have been designed and developed indigenously. At the same time, nine LCH have been manufactured against the sanction of 15 limited series production variants and are in the process of being handed over to the Services.
In another development, the Army is in negotiations for acquiring 11 more Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the U.S.
In June, the Army raised its first LCH squadron in Bengaluru which will move to the LAC in Eastern Command once complete next year. “Of the 15 LSP on order, nine LCH have been produced. They are in the acceptance stage. As of now the Army is looking at acquiring around 111 LUH and 95 LCH.

Hindustan Aeronautics To Open Office In Malaysia

The office in Malaysia will help HAL in tapping the new business opportunities for Fighter Lead-in Trainer (FLIT) LCA and other requirements of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) like Su-30 MKM and Hawk upgrades. It will reinforce the commitment of India to supporting the Malaysian Defence Forces and industry for sustainable aerospace and defence landscape in Malaysia, HAL said in a statement.
HAL had submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Malaysia during October 2021 for the supply of 18 FLIT LCAs against a global tender issued by RMAF. The final winner of the tender is expected to be declared soon by Malaysian authorities.
LCA Tejas stands a fair chance of selection in the bid as it meets all the parameters sought by RMAF.
Further, being one of the largest producer of Russian origin Su-30 aircraft, HAL has capabilities to extend the required support to RMAF for the Su-30 MKM fleet which is facing low serviceability issues due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. HAL can support RMAF for upgrading their Hawk fleet as well. Other HAL platforms like HTT-40, Do-228, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) etc., have the potential to be inducted by RMAF in future.
Considering the above factors, HAL’s office in Kuala Lumpur will take up the market promotion of HAL’s range of products and services not only in Malaysia but in the entire South East Asia.
The office will also contribute to increasing the serviceability of existing platforms being operated by RMAF and for neighbouring Air Forces in the region.

India In Advanced Stage of Talks With US For Procurement of MQ-9B Drones

India is in an advanced stage of negotiations with the US to procure 30 MQ-9B Predator armed drones at a cost of over USD 3 billion to crank up its overall surveillance apparatus along the LAC with China and in the Indian Ocean, people familiar with the development.
The long-endurance-hunter-killer drones are being procured for the three services as they can carry out a variety of roles including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, over-the-horizon targeting and hitting stationary ground targets.
The MQ-9B drone is a variant of MQ-9 “Reaper” that was reportedly used to fire a modified version of the Hellfire missile which eliminated al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in the heart of Kabul last month.

First Women Chinook Pilots Of The Indian Air Force

Two female combat pilots are taking the controls of Chinook helicopters for the first time in IAF history. The Boeing multi-mission helicopter has been essential in assisting army deployments close to the LAC.
At a time when India and China are embroiled in a protracted border dispute, Squadron Leaders Parul Bhardwaj and Swati Rathore would command Chinook helicopter units in the northern and eastern sectors close to LAC.
Before being transferred to CH-47F Chinook units headquartered in Chandigarh and Mohanbari in Assam, respectively, Squadron Leaders Rathore and Bhardwaj formerly piloted Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopters.

Former Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria joins UPDIC as Chief Nodal Officer

With a focus on indigenisation in defence and aerospace industry, former Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria has been appointed as ‘Chief Nodal Officer’ of UP Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), which is being developed by the UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
The Ex-Air Chief Marshal will helm the charge of UP defence corridor, an aspirational project under UPEIDA towards the Government of India’s impetus to reduce the foreign dependency of the Indian Aerospace & Defence Sector.
“ACM Bhadauria is appointed as Chief Nodal Officer for the UPDIC Project which is going to be immensely benefited from his plethora of experience spanning four decades with Defence services”, mentioned a communique.
Notably, Bhadauria involvement will be a catalyst for the development of the UP Defence Industrial Corridor. He is the former chief of the Indian Air Force with an immense focus on supporting the indigenous defence industry and Atmanirbharta in the Defence and Aerospace Sector”. (ANI)
The former Air Chief’s involvement in UPDIC Project will immensely benefit from his plethora of experience spanning four decades with Defence services. Further, his involvement will be a catalyst for the development of the Defence Corridor along with the immense focus on indigenous defence industry and self-reliance.
Understanding the imperativeness of DPDIC
With the project costing Rs 20,000 crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 21, 2018, announced the Defence Industrial Corridor project in Bundelkhand region in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is the nodal agency to execute the project.
The Defence Corridor has six nodes viz. Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh and Chitrakoot. The defence corridor was orchestrated with the Indian Defence industry going through a rapid change where India is not just focusing on expansion of Defence market but also is looking at arenas to strengthen indigenous manufacturing under ‘Make in India’ scheme.
Notably, with Indian Armed Forces being the 2nd largest armed forces in the world, the country spends a substantial amount on Defence & Aerospace equipment. India was one of the largest importers of arms with a share of 9.5% of world import between 2014-18.The Union Budget 2020-21 also allocated around $47.47 billion (excluding Defence pension) for Defence, out of which 1/3rd is dedicatedly allocated for capital expenditure.
Where on one hand India is welcoming foreign players to enter the Indian Defence market through opening up FDI, as they provide for more than 50% of Defence equipment procured, the nation is also focusing on development of Indian Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) by encouraging collaborations like joint ventures, partnerships, offsets etc. with an aim to decrease foreign dependency.
With the above objective, it was decided that two Defence Industrial Corridors would be developed, in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and was announced during the Union Budget of 2018-19.

Jaguar Fighters To Start Retiring From 2025-26 Onwards: V R Chaudhari

Jaguar strike fighter aircraft that remain un-upgraded will be phased out from the IAF fleet starting from 2025-26 onwards till 2033 when the last of the fleet type will be completely phased out. Next three years remaining 3 squadrons of the Mig-21 bison will be phased out and then they will start with Jaguar squadrons.
The IAF will retire one more squadron of the MiG-21 Bison aircraft by September 30 and phase out the remaining fleet by 2025, as the recent fatal crashes of the Soviet-era fighter jets intensified safety concerns and force authorities to step up the induction of LCA Tejas aircraft.
The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French jet attack aircraft originally used by the British Royal Air Force and the French Air Force in the close air support and nuclear strike role. It is still in service with the Indian Air Force.

During subsequent trials, the aircraft will be equipped with Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, Advanced Short Range Air-Air Missile (ASRAAM) which is a combat missile, Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite and Air to Air Refuelling (AAR) to meet the operational requirements of the IAF”

IAF To Arm More Sukhoi’s With Brahmos Missiles

The IAF is going to arm more Sukhoi-30MKI jets with the precision-strike BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, whose range has been extended from 290 to 450 km, even as a blueprint is also being drawn to indigenously upgrade all the 260 such Russian-origin fighters in the combat fleet.
Impressed with the first test of 450-km BrahMos from a Sukhoi-30MKI jet in the Bay of Bengal in May, IAF plans to send another 20-25 jets for the structural, electrical, mechanical and software modifications required to carry the 2.5-tonne missile to defence PSU HAL.
These Sukhois will be in addition to the original 40 jets earmarked for BrahMos missiles. Thirty-five of the first 40 Sukhoi’s with the 290-km BrahMos have been delivered back to IAF by HAL.

Tatas, Lockheed Martin In Talks To Make Sikorsky S-76 Helicopters In India

The Tatas are in talks with Lockheed Martin for manufacturing Sikorsky S-76 helicopter in India, according to reports. The S-76 is a medium-sized helicopter widely put to both civilian and military use in many countries. The armed forces of Britain, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Argentina use (or used earlier) it.
Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s biggest defence manufacturers, owns Sikorsky. The Tatas have a contract to make 40 C-295 transport aircraft for the IAF. The Indian government is aware of the discussions between the two, according to sources cited in the media.
If the deal goes through, it will be one of the biggest milestones for Indian aviation manufacturing. As per various reports, there are plans to sell Sikorsky helicopters not just in India but all over the world.

Successful Firing Of Extended Range Version Of Brahmos Air Launched Missile

Indian Air Force successfully fired the Extended Range Version of Brahmos Air Launched missile against a Ship Target from a SU-30MKI aircraft. The missile achieved the desired mission objectives in the Bay of Bengal region.
With this, IAF has achieved a significant capability boost to carry out precision strikes from SU-30MKI aircraft against land/ sea targets over very long ranges. The dedicated and synergetic efforts of IAF, Indian Navy, DRDO, BAPL and HAL have been instrumental in achieving this feat.

Garuda Aerospace Becomes First Drone Company To Get DGCA Approval For Type Certification, RPTO

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni backed India’s leading drone manufacturer, Garuda Aerospace on becoming India’s first drone startup to receive both Type Certification and Remote Pilot Training Organization (RTPO) approvals by DGCA for their indigenously designed Kisan Drones.
DGCA Type certification is provided on the basis of the quality check of the drones and is issued after a rigorous testing process for the UAVs.
MS Dhoni has invested in a company that manufactures drones and supports the agriculture ecosystem in the country. Dhoni has been involved in various industries such as clothing, alcohol and agriculture. He is currently under contract to invest in drones as well that too for agriculture.
Having been awarded Type Certificate for the GA-AG model, Garuda Kisan Drone is now eligible for Rs 10 lakh unsecured loans from Agri Infrastructure Fund at a 5 percent interest and 50-100 per cent subsidy from the Government of India. Priced at Rs 4.50 lakh, “Garuda Kisan Drone is India’s most affordable advanced automated Agri Drone which has DGCA-approved Type Certification in the under 25kg small category. ICAR, KVKs, FMTTI, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer welfare, and several other Government Agriculture bodies will now have an option of procuring high-tech Made in India Drones manufactured by Garuda Aerospace,” company statement read.

Joint HADR Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ Culminates At Air Force Station Agra

The Annual Joint HADR Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ was conducted by the IAF at Air Force Station, Agra from 28 November 2022 to 30 November 2022. Various stakeholders from the country and representatives from ASEAN member countries participated in the exercise.
Rajnath Singh was the chief guest on the second day of the Multi-Agency Exercise dedicated to Capability Demonstration. Raksha Mantri emphasized the need for collaborative HADR management at national and regional levels to improve interoperability and provide faster response to crisis situations.
Samanvay 2022 tested the efficacy of all available HADR resources. It emerged as a significant step towards achieving synergy between various stakeholders and facilitated the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practices with the participants including those representing the ASEAN member countries.

INDIAN AIR FORCE AT A GLANCE

‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’: In 2022, the IAF continued to modernize its airfield infrastructure under the project – Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) with a major Indian company M/s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). The upgradation of navigational aids and infrastructure under this project is enhancing the operational capability by facilitating air operations of military and civil aircraft even in adverse weather conditions.

Support for Drone Industry: Unmanned aerial vehicles, popularly known as Drones, have globally caught the imagination for their military application and challenges globally. The Drone industry in the country holds tremendous potential for growth. The IAF has done its bit by launching Mehar Baba-2. The competition is aimed at developing indigenous technology for a ‘Swarm drone-based system to detect foreign objects on aircraft operating surfaces’.

Rafale: The teeth of IAF got sharper as France completed the delivery of all 36 Rafale aircraft. The final fighter jet of the deal landed in India in December. Both Rafale Squadrons also became fully operational.

Training and Exercises: The IAF continued to train harder this year exercising not only with sister services for enhancing joint manship but also with the Air Forces of friendly foreign countries to learn from their experiences and best practice. Listed below are a few:

Exercise Eastern Bridge VI: IAF participated in Ex Eastern Bridge VI with Royal Air Force of Oman at AF Station Jodhpur in February.
Tactical Leadership Programme in Egypt: IAF participated in Tactical Leadership Programme at Egyptian Air Force Weapon School in Cairo, Egypt in July.
Ex Udara Shakti: An exercise named ‘Udara Shakti’ was carried out with the Malaysian Air Force in August in which four SU-30 MKI & two C-17 aircraftof IAF participated. This was first ever fighter exercise with Malaysia.
Ex Pitch Black 22: IAF participated in Ex Pitch Black 22 in Australia in August-September. Interoperability was demonstrated as IAF carried out air to air refueling with refueller aircraft of the French Air & Space Force and during ferry from India to Australia. Air to Air refueling with Royal Australian Air Force during ferry back from Australia to India was also carried out.
Joint Flying Exercise with UK: IAF conducted Joint flying exercise with RAF at Air Force Station, Palam in September.
Exercise Garuda-VII: IAF conducted Ex Garuda-VII with French Air & Space Force (FASF) at AF Station Jodhpur in October-November.
Samavay: The annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ was conducted at Air Force Station, Agra in November. Various Indian stakeholders and representatives from ASEAN member countries participated in the exercise.

Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief:

Helicopters have been regularly undertaking Air Maintenance, Disaster Relief, Casualty evacuation, Anti Naxal Operations and Communication Duties for various agencies. More often than not, helicopters are the first responder in case of any natural calamity like floods, forest fire or earthquakes. The details of HADR undertaken by IAF in 2022 are as follows:-

Evacuation of Pilgrims from Deogarh Ropeway: Three MLH, one ALH Dhruv and one Cheetah were utilized in April for evacuating 35 pilgrims, who were stuck due to the unserviceability of Deogarh Ropeway in Jharkhand. The rescue was carried out with NDRF, Army and State agencies.
Airlift of Cheetahs to Kuno National Park: Eight Cheetahs from Kuno National Park were transported fromNamibia via Chartered Cargo Aircraft to Air Force Station Gwalior in September. IAF utilised 2 MI-17 for airlift of the Cheetahs and one Chinook for personnel along with their additional load.

Casualty Evacuations: IAF carried out regular casualty evacuation as demanded by various State authorities. During the year, 220 sorties were flown towards casualty evacuation. This also includes rescue of foreign nationals.

AF Day Parade: This year, the Air Force Day parade and fly-past were held in Chandigarh. The fly-past was carried out over Sukhna Lake on October 8th and was witnessed by a large number of people from Chandigarh and adjoining areas.

Diamond Jubilee of Chetak Helicopters: This year, Chetak helicopters in the inventory of the Armed Forces completed 60 years of glorious service to the nation. To commemorate this, momentous event celebrations were held under the aegis of IAF’s Training Command at AF Stn, Hakimpet. The Raksha Mantri was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Green Mobility Initiative: In order to achieve a reduction of carbon footprint and in keeping with the Government’s initiative towards the introduction of Green mobility, IAF introduced Tata Nexon Electric vehicles in November. The IAF plans to enhance the usage of electric vehicles in a progressive manner by procuring e-vehicles against downgraded vehicles.
