The recent attack on an Indian army vehicle in the Poonch area of J&K by Pakistan-backed terrorists, which claimed five lives, is a tragic reminder that, despite facing a slew of extremely dangerous domestic threats ranging from political instability to financial meltdown and burgeoning terrorism, the Pakistan army’s proxy war against India through state-sponsored terrorism continues unabated.
The fact that Pakistan has been ‘grey-listed’ by the international terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force [FATF] for four years leaves no doubt about its culpability in abetting and sponsoring terrorism. In fact, then-Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan revealed in 2019 that “when you talk about militant groups, we still have about 30,000-40,000 armed people who have been trained and fought in some part of Afghanistan or Kashmir.”
Pakistan – The Epicentre of Terrorism?
Khan’s disclosure raises several important concerns, such as what attracts terrorists of all colors and hues to Pakistan. Why did Osama bin Laden, the founder of Al Qaeda, chose to stay in Pakistan? So had the head of the Khalistan Commando Force, Paramjit Singh Panjwar, who had settled in Lahore and was slain a few days before, but Pakistan had denied his presence. How come approximately 150 terror groups and persons designated by the UN Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee are either based in Pakistan, have links to the country, or operate from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas?
Though regrettable, the international community’s refusal to seriously consider the possible consequences of Khan’s shattering revelation and the fact that Pakistan harbors the greatest number of UN-designated terrorists is still welcomed. This is due to the fact that, despite waxing poetic about forming a united front to combat the scourge of terrorism, countries only take substantial action on this subject when they are directly threatened.
Pakistan hides from the allegations of being the epicenter of terrorism by playing the victim card, even though there is a mountain of evidence that claims that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir has originated from Pakistan’s Rawalpindi. Even though Pakistan Army has a big role in fueling this Terrorism, they really have no qualms whatsoever for their doings. We should also remember that when Article 370 was abrogated, Pakistan Army Chief Gen Bajwa told that Pakistan Army stands firm with the people of Kashmir even if it was an internal matter of the Indian Government. Pakistan’s Current Army Chief also stated that “they will continue to provide political, moral, and diplomatic support to our Kashmiri brothers”. So it can be safe to assume that Pakistan will continue its Proxy war in the J&K region, even though they do not have enough fuel to fulfill their own commitments.
Future India should look into
Even though Rawalpindi is busily fledging its proxy war in J&K, the harsh reality is it is also preparing to open another front in Punjab by supporting Sikh separatists seeking Khalistan. The Indian government is left with no option but to opt for a tough approach and formulate a proactive no-holds-barred strategy that dissuades Pakistan from sponsoring proxy wars against India. Isn’t it obvious that even when the Indian government is more into diplomatic talks, the other side is still engaged in increasing Terror attacks?
