Indian Army recently decided that they will adopt a common uniform for the ranks of Brigadier and above irrespective of their parent cadre and their appointment. This very decision was taken in the recently concluded Army Commanders Conference 2023 which was done in a Hybrid mode for the first time.
What are the Changes?
Shoulder Ranks, Headgear, Gorget Patches, Belts and Shoes of Senior officers of flag ranks who are brigadier and above will be now in a standard and common outfit. These changes in the uniform will be implemented from August 1 2023 and such changes are not applicable to the ranks below Brigadier that is Colonel and below. The Flag-Rank officers will now not wear any lanyards.
Currently, distinct types of uniforms and accessories are associated with specific arms, regiments, and services in the Army. This identification with a distinct identity within the Arms, Regiment, or Services is critical for junior leadership and rank and file to further build camaraderie, esprit de corps, and regimental ethos, which are the bedrocks of soldiering. At the unit or battalion level, a distinct sense of identity reflects a strong bond among officers and men in the same regiment.
Officers with the rank of Brigadier and above, on the other hand, have completed appointments where they commanded units or battalions and are generally deployed to Army headquarters or other locations where officers from all Arms and Services work together. The decision will help strengthen the Indian Army’s reputation as a fair and equitable outfit. A standard uniform would establish a shared identity for all senior-rank officers while reflecting the true ethos of the Indian Army.
