Lance Naik S. Rajasekhar of the 191 Artillery Regiment tragically lost his life during a training exercise in the Teesta River’s Pakyong district, according to police reports. The incident unfolded on Monday as part of an annual rafting training program when the raft encountered a damaged iron bridge structure, leading to its capsizing and the soldier being swept away by strong currents.
Officials revealed that the bridge had suffered significant damage and was partially collapsed as a result of the floods earlier this year. This posed a hazard during the training exercise, which was taking place between Bardang and Rangpo Mining at the time of the accident.
In response to the incident, an immediate search and rescue operation was initiated by the Army, with additional support from personnel at the Teesta Rescue Centre. After extensive efforts, the body of Lance Naik Rajasekhar was ultimately recovered downstream at Tar Khola in the Kalimpong district.
As per protocol, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. The shocking loss of Lance Naik Rajasekhar has created a profound sense of sorrow within the unit. The Army has extended its heartfelt condolences to his family and reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the safety of personnel engaged in training activities. They also honored the sacrifice made by the fallen soldier during this tragic event.
