ATGAS is an extensive caliber gun system that can be used to fire future Long Range Guided Munitions (LRGM) with pinpoint accuracy and high penetration. The system is equipped with an all-electric drive that will enable maintenance-free and reliable operation over long periods of time. The system is now in a stage of development known as advanced.
The 155 mm caliber ammunition owned by the Army is fired by the ATAGS’s armament system, which primarily consists of a barrel, breech mechanism, muzzle brake, and recoil mechanism. This ammunition has a longer range, more accuracy, and more firepower. To provide reliable operation over a longer period of time and no maintenance, the ATAGS is designed with an all-electric drive.
Features of ATAGS
High mobility, rapid deployment, an auxiliary power mode, an advanced communication system, an automatic command, and control system, and the ability to fire in direct fire mode at night are only a few of its sophisticated features.
For technical fire control, fire planning, deployment management, and operational logistics management of the Army, the specialized gun system is compatible with C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) systems like the Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCCS) called Shakti.
Future Role
The former Ordnance Factory Board’s Howitzer Dhanush is being developed for Advanced Weapons and Equipment India at the same time that ATAGS is being developed by the DRDO. The Army and the Ministry of Defense approved the bulk manufacture of 114 Dhanush in 2019. Older artillery systems will be effectively replaced in the following days by ATAGS and Dhanush.
Shell for Ramjet Propelled Artillery
Together with IIT Kanpur, ARDE, and Research Centre Imarat (RCI), IIT Madras is developing a ramjet-powered redesign of an existing 155 mm shell that can travel more than 60 kilometers. It will be made ATAGS compliant. For trajectory adjustment, the shell will use precise guidance equipment. Munitions India would be able to produce the shells with the help of IIT Madras.
