Hon’ble Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, paid a visit to INS Vikrant in Mumbai on March 23 as part of his visit to India from March 8 to March 11. This is his first bilateral visit to India since taking over on May 22. Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, welcomed the Australian Prime Minister aboard. Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, was also in attendance.
Activities on INS Vikrant
Onboard, the Hon’ble Prime Minister was greeted with a guard of honor and briefed on the roles and capabilities of INS Vikrant. He was also shown the Light Combat Aircraft. He then interacted with a cross-section of Indian Navy personnel.
During his press conference, he emphasized the two countries’ strong diplomatic and military ties and announced that Australia will host the 27th edition of MALABAR, an annual multilateral naval wargaming exercise involving the navies of the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, for the first time. The MALABAR Exercise is an annual multilateral naval wargaming exercise between the navies of India and the United States that began in 1992. Japan joined the exercise in 2015, while Australia joined in 2020.

India-Australia Defence Cooperation
In 2009, Australia and India elevated their bilateral relationship from Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2020. On June 20, the two countries signed a pact that allows reciprocal access to military bases for logistics support, the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement (MLSA), which allows the militaries of the two countries to use each other’s bases for supply repair and replenishment, in addition to expanding overall defence cooperation.
