Lecturette is one of the GTO tasks in SSB where the candidate has to deliver a small speech on a given topic. The choice of topic can be chosen by the candidate out of the 4 given to him and a preparatory time of 3 minutes is given to him for doing the same.
During the lecturette, the assessor checks for one’s ability to talk in public, attitude, body language, confidence, tone, etc. In order to perform well in this one can groom himself by following the given techniques, they are :
1. Building Knowledge: The topics given in the task are relatively easy and are general awareness topics. The aim is to make sure one has a basic level of knowledge of day-to-day stuff which can be gained by reading about important topics on a regular basis. some such topics are sports, environment, climate change, Indo-Pak relations, Russia-Ukraine War also recent national and international affairs topics. 2. Improving fluency of the Lecture: The flow of the speech must be structured where you have an introduction, the problem/statement of the topics, solution to it, recent happening relating to it, and conclusion. This goes on to show that you have a structured way of thinking and can convey your view to others clearly.
3. Self Evaluation: Fix a topic, Stand up to a mirror look into it, and deliver the lecture. In doing so you gain the confidence in looking to faces to deliver lecturette. This can improve your confidence and body language as well.
4. Reading paper: The habit of reading paper can be of immense help in this preparation. There are multiple areas where it can help you lecture namely, your vocabulary,recent happening in a particular field, can help predict topics too!
5. Read a lot: A key to success in this exercise is reading. Collect the topics which are expected to appear in this test. A major help can be a standard essay book. They generally contain topics of relevance, both for the lecturette and the Group Discussion. Reading will not only improve your knowledge but also improve your English. 6. Participate in team events: When you participate in team events you get to communicate to people and voice your opinion, in doing so you learn to speak in public which is lecturette. 7. Be loud, but keep the rate of speech slow: If you speak very fast, you’ll finish your content fast. People who speak fast they tend to seek fillers in their speech, as they tend to finish their content fast. If your rate of speech is more than your rate of thinking, you’ll always get stuck in between. Once you are stuck it is difficult to recover. Hence it is advisable to speak slowly. 8. Eye Contact: Eye Contact holds a very important role in effective communication. Imagine somebody telling you something and looking here and there, will you be still interested in what that person is saying? In lecturette too, eye contact is very important. If you lose eye contact, you lose your audience. Eye contact not only helps in communicating better, it also helps in boosting up your confidence. 9. Divide your speech: Once you get the topic, and you go aside to prepare it, divide your speech into parts. Your speech must have an introduction to the topic, a body, and a conclusion. Make sure you give the conclusion in the last thirty seconds. This way you’ll not run short of content also, and your speech will look very organized.
10. Think in English: The medium of speech is English in lecturette. However, if you get stuck you may speak in Hindi, but return to English as soon as possible. Many of the candidates have an issue in speaking in English, as it is not their first language. To avoid getting stuck, think in English. That means whatever points you are thinking in your mind, think them in English, rather than thinking in your convenient language, then converting it to English.
