Gajraj System

  • The Indian Railways has initiated a pioneering step towards wildlife conservation by deploying the “Gajraj system,” an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solution designed to prevent elephant fatalities on railway tracks.
  • This surveillance system is being implemented along a 700-kilometer stretch in forest areas to alert locomotive pilots of elephants’ presence on the tracks, thereby mitigating the risk of collisions.
  • The total cost of the project implementation on the 700-km tracks will be ₹181 crore. It is a kind of Intrusion Detection System or IDS.

  • It  is built to use the existing optical fiber cable (OFC) as sensors to identify elephant movements near railway tracks and alert locations to station masters, loco pilots, and control offices.
  • The Indian Railways has chosen the Northeast Frontier Railways to pilot this program and implement this new, cutting-edge technology in some of the worst affected areas.
  • Every time an elephant steps onto the track, the system alerts the train controller, station master, train drivers, and other stakeholders who take precautionary measures to avoid imminent danger.
  • A real-time alarm is generated when a movement is detected.

Kanchan Devi

  • Kanchan Devi, 1991-batch Indian Forest Service Officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Forestry Research Education (ICFRE).
  • This marks a historic milestone, with Kanchan becoming the first woman officer to ascend to this esteemed position within the premier council operating under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

  • The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) stands as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India.
  • With its headquarters in Dehradun, the ICFRE plays a crucial role in conducting forestry research, transferring developed technologies to states and user agencies, and imparting forestry education.

Vaishali Rameshbabu

  • Vaishali Rameshbabu, a 22-year-old chess player from India, has recently earned the title of Grandmaster at the IV El Llobregat Open in Spain.
  • This achievement makes her only the third woman from India to become a Grandmaster, following in the footsteps of Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli.
  • Her victory over Turkish FM Tamer Tarik Selbes was pivotal in crossing the 2500 FIDE rating threshold required for the Grandmaster title.

  • This accomplishment is particularly significant as it makes Vaishali and her younger brother, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, the first brother-sister pair in history to both hold Grandmaster titles.

  • Three prominent Indian business leaders – Nandan Nilekani, KP Singh and Nikhil Kamath, have earned a coveted spot on the 17th edition of Forbes Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy list.
  • Released recently, this unranked compilation recognizes individuals who leverage their fortunes and personal resources to contribute significantly to various charitable causes.
  • Nadan Nilekani, co-founder and chairman of the renowned tech giant Infosys, has been acknowledged for his substantial contribution of Rs.3.2 billion (USD 38 million) to his alma mater, IIT Bombay.

India Internet Governance Forum

Mount Merapi

  • In a devastating turn of events, at least 11 hikers have been confirmed dead following the eruption of Mount Marapi in western Indonesia.
  • Here were a total of 75 hikers on the mountain who rescue workers were trying to account for. Twelve were still missing and 49 had descended, some of whom had been taken to hospital.

  • Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra, with a peak of 2,891 metres (9,484 feet), erupted sending a tower of ash 3,000 metres into the sky.
  • Marapi is on the second alert level of Indonesia’s four-step system and authorities have imposed a three-kilometre exclusion zone around its crater.

  • Indonesia sits on the Pacific’s so-called “Ring of Fire” and has 127 active volcanoes, according to the country’s volcanology agency, including the 2,891-metre (about 9,500 ft) Mount Marapi.
  • Located on the border between the Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces, it is considered the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548.
