World Teachers’ Day

  • World Teachers Day is an international day held annually on 5 October to celebrate the work of teachers.
  • It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
  • In 2023, World Teachers’ Day celebrations will focus on the theme “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov ‘for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots’
  • French-born Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus of the United States and Russian-born Alexei Ekimov on Wednesday won the Nobel Chemistry Prize for research in tiny particles known as Quantum dots.
  • The trio succeeded in producing these tiny components, that “now spread their light from televisions and LED lamps, and can also guide surgeons when they remove tumour tissue, among many other things,”.

NIIF and JBIC Collaboration

  • The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Japan Bank for International Cooperation, JBIC have tied up to launch a 600 million US dollar India-Japan Fund.
  • This joint initiative will facilitate collaboration and investment between India and Japan in the field of climate and environment.
  • According to the Finance Ministry, the Government of India will contribute 49 per cent of the corpus and the remaining 51 per cent will be contributed by JBIC.
  • This fund mechanism will promote Japanese investments in India by focussing on investing in environmental sustainability and low carbon emission strategies.
  • The Finance Ministry has termed this collaboration a key milestone in the strategic and economic partnership between India and Japan.

McCarthy ousted in historic vote

  • In an extraordinary showdown, the US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been voted out of the job.
  • The 216-to-210 vote marked the first time in history that the House removed its leader, with eight Republicans voting along with 208 Democrats to remove McCarthy.
  • The rebellion was led by Representative Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida. He had accused the party leader of not doing enough to cut federal spending or to stand up to Democratic President Joe Biden.
  • McCarthy told lawmakers that he would not run again for the Speaker, putting the gavel up for grabs.
  • The next steps are highly uncertain as there is no obvious successor to lead the House Republican majority. Action is halted in the House until next week when Republicans try to elect a new speaker.

SBI launches Mobile Handheld Device

  • State Bank of India launched Mobile Handheld Device to enhance accessibility and convenience in availing banking services to the customers.
  • This device will provide cash withdrawal, cash deposit, fund transfer, balance inquiry and mini statement at doorsteps of customers.
  • The initiative will particularly benefit customers who face challenges in accessing Bank Branch or Customer Service Point outlets due to health issues, Senior citizens and Divyangjans.
  • Additionally, the bank plans to expand its offerings by including services such as enrolments under social security schemes, account opening, remittance and card-based services shortly.

International Knit fair

  • The 50th India International Knit fair will be held from 12th to 14th October at the India Knit Fair Association complex (IKFA) in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu.
  • The main theme of the fair is Active and Sportswear, Environmental Social Governance, Artificial Intelligence and digitalisation.
  • Seventy exhibitors from Tiruppur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Karur, and Gujarat will take part in the fair.
  • Chairman of the Association, A. Sakthivel said  that the IKFA has tied up with Sourcing Consultants Association, Association of Buying Agents for Textiles, Brand Sourcing Leaders, and the NIFT Alumni.
  • Leading buyers and their representatives from Europe, US, UK and other countries have been invited for the fair.

Centre declare NLFT & ATTF Unlawful Associations

  • The Central Government has declared the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and their factions as unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activites (Prevention) Act.
  • The Home Ministry has banned these organisations for five years.

  • The Ministry said, the government is of the opinion that the activities of NLFT and ATTF are detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India and that they are unlawful associations.
  •  The Ministry said, these factions have been engaging in subversive and violent activities, thereby undermining the authority of the Government and spreading terror and violence among people for achieving their objectives.
  • The Ministry added that if there is no immediate curb and control on these organisations, they will mobilise their cadres for escalating their secessionist, subversive, and violent activities.
  • It added that they will also propagate anti-national activities in collusion with forces inimical to India’s sovereignty and national integrity.

PayU elevates Anirban Mukherjee as Global CEO

  • In a significant move, Anirban Mukherjee, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PayU India, has been promoted to the role of global CEO of PayU.
  • This move signals a strategic shift within PayU to concentrate on its Indian operations and adapt to the rapidly evolving digital payments landscape in the country.
  • Laurent Le Moal, the current Global CEO, will transition to an advisory role within the company.
  •  Anirban Mukherjee will be taking over from Laurent Le Moal, who has decided to step back from the day-to-day operational management of the business.
  • However, Le Moal will continue to be involved with Prosus and PayU in an advisory capacity.

  • In Archery, the Indian duo of Jyoti Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale won gold in the Compound Mixed Team final, defeating South Korea by a score of 159-158.
  • In Boxing, Lovlina Borgohain won silver in the women’s 75 kg event, while Parveen Hooda won bronze in the women’s 57 kg event.

  • In Squash, the Indian mixed team of Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh won bronze after losing to the Malaysian duo.
  • Ram Babu and Manju Rani opened the country’s medal account on the eleventh day clinching the bronze medal in the 35km mixed relay race walk.

  • In Kabaddi, the women’s team defeated Thailand 54-22 to top Group A. The men’s team beat Thailand 63-26 in their second Group A match. In badminton, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy reached the singles quarterfinals.
  • India’s Neeraj Chopra will step out to defend his men’s javelin throw crown, and the Indian men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams will also be in the medal hunt. The country’s athletes are poised to add more medals to the tally in the coming days.
