Preventing Exploitation Of Environment In War

  • On November 6th every year, the UN observes the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
  • The day seeks to make people aware of the consequences that war and conflict have on the environment.
  • Loss of life and the destruction of property are obvious consequences of war and armed conflict.
  • There is another consequence as well. This is the negative effect that war and conflict has on the environment. Some of these negative effects include: Water pollution, Torched crops, Poisoned soil, Dead animals, Destruction of forests.
  •  In November 2001, the UN General Assembly declared November 6th as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
  • The day is also referred to as World Day to Protect the Environment in War.

1st Australia India Education And Skill Council Meeting

  • The First Australia India Education and Skill Council meeting will be held at IIT Gandhinagar in Gujarat on Monday. Education Ministry said, this is for the first time that education and skilling is being brought under the same institutional forum.
  • This is expected to foster collaboration, participation and synergy in critical areas of mutual interest in the education and the skill domain.
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister for Education, Government of Australia Jason Clare will co-chair the meeting. The meeting will provide a platform for academic and skill experts to discuss a wide range of mutually agreed priorities, with the aim of shaping the future of education and skilling in both the nations.
  • The meeting will be attended by senior government officials from India and Australia along with heads of Higher Education Institutions and skill sectors from both the countries.

COLORS Collaborates With WCD Ministry

  • The entertainment channel COLORS has collaborated with the Ministry of Women and Child Development to support the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative to bring societal change.
  • The collaboration will help to raise awareness around girl child abandonment through their latest show Doree.

  • The Ministry said, television as a medium has played a huge role in holding a mirror to society and led to many women becoming agents of change.
  • Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said, government has made great strides through the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative in changing the way girl child is perceived.
  • She said the channel will also raise awareness of our Child Helpline Number 1098 amongst viewers and provide the much-needed popular support to this initiative.

Philippines Announces Exit From China’s BRI

  • The Philippines has announced to exit from China’s Belt and Road Initiatives. The full termination of major infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative has been announced by the Philippine Department of Transportation in favour of competitors from the West and Japan.
  • As per the Philippine Senate, doubt now shrouds nearly all of China’s crucial investment initiatives in the Philippines, owing to economic and political factors.
  • This has led to a new low point in Philippine-China relations, marking a drastic reversal from the six years of warm engagement during the pro-Beijing Rodrigo Duterte presidency.
  • The Belt and Road Initiative, known within China as the One Belt One Road is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in more than 150 countries and international organizations.

State Food Safety Index

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently released the State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2022-2023, which assesses the performance of Indian states and union territories in ensuring food safety.
  • This annual evaluation employs a dynamic benchmarking model to objectively measure food safety across all regions.

  • The latest index introduced a new parameter, ‘Improvement in SFSI Rank,’ altering the weights of existing parameters and shedding light on states’ progress over the previous year.
  • Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading state in consumer empowering initiatives, followed by Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Gujarat and Kerala were the top performers in Food testing  category, while Andhra Pradesh performed the worst.

Bangladesh To Host 24th Asian Archery Championships

  • Bangladesh will host the 24th Asian Archery Championships in 2025 after winning by 14-10 votes in the bid at the World Archery Asia Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • A total of twenty four member countries of the Asian continent participated in the congress. Bangladesh and China applied for bids as host countries for the 24th Asian Archery Championship, reports Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
  • When the vote was held between the two countries that participated in the bid at the Congress, Bangladesh won the vote and was allowed to host the Asian Archery Championship.
  • The 23rd Asian Archery Championship will begin on Sunday (Nov 5) in Bangkok, Thailand.

  • Senior Indian diplomat, Surendra Adhana, has been re-elected to serve on the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) at the United Nations for the term 2024-26.
  • This re-election underscores his expertise and the confidence placed in him by the international community.
  • Counsellor Surendra Adhana, representing India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, has been re-elected to the ACABQ by acclamation.

  • This re-election reflects his standing as a seasoned diplomat and his demonstrated capabilities in addressing complex budgetary and administrative matters at the United Nations.
  • The ACABQ is an expert committee comprising 21 members elected by the General Assembly. Members serve in a personal capacity and not as representatives of member states.
  • The committee is elected for a three-year term and is carefully structured to ensure broad geographical representation.
  • The functions and responsibilities of the Advisory Committee, as well as its composition, are governed by the provisions of Assembly resolutions 14 (I) of 13 February 1946 and 32/103 of 14 December 1977 and rules 155 to 157 of the rules of procedure of the Assembly.

Accelerating Progress On SDG’s

  • NITI Aayog is organizing a workshop on “Accelerating Progress on Sustainable Development Goals for the domestic adoption and implementation” tomorrow at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. Workshop is being organized in association with the Institute for Human Development (IHD) and Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP).
  • This will be fifth in the series of G20 Feeder Thematic Workshops planned on 10 themes discussed in the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD).

  • The subject experts, representatives of think-tank, academia, and other stakeholders will discuss key topics, each dedicated to advancing the progress on the SDGs in India.
  • The inaugural plenary session, titled “Nutrition, Health, and Education: Prime Enablers of Human Capital and Prosperity,” will be followed by three below mentioned segments, which will delve into specific SDG priorities.
  • Eliminating Hunger and Malnutrition: Enabling access to affordable, safe, nutritious and healthy diets and strengthening research cooperation on climate-resilient and nutritious grains.
  • Ensuring Good Health for all: – Focused on ways to strengthen services to advance good health, including preparedness for pandemics and infectious disease control and fostering the one-health approach.
  • Delivering Quality Education: – Strategies for providing inclusive, high-quality education and skills training.
  • The workshop is being organised in a hybrid mode. About 40 think tanks and representatives of universities and educational institutions will participate. Senior officials of states/UTs and 500 aspirational blocks will also join virtually.
  • The workshop’s overarching goal is to advance the implementation of the SDGs in India, aligned with the G20 NDLD and encouraging domestic ownership of India’s commitment to the global advancement of these critical development objectives.
