World Cerebral Palsy Day

  • World Cerebral Palsy Day is a global movement that started in 2012. Shines a spotlight on cerebral palsy (CP) and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Celebrated every year on October 6th, this day serves as a platform to raise awareness about CP, support those living with the condition, and advocate for greater inclusion and understanding.
  • Children and adults affected by cerebral palsy often face challenges that hinder their full participation in society.

  • The Theme for World Cerebral Palsy Day in 2023 is “Together Stronger.” This theme highlights the importance of unity, collaboration, and mutual support within the cerebral palsy community and beyond.
  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India is the nodal department to look after all the development agenda of Persons with Disabilities of the country.
  • With the vision to create awareness about Cerebral Palsy among the masses, the Department is observing the World Cerebral Palsy Day on 6th October 2023, through the institutions associated with it by conducting various events across the country.

Shri Ramalinga Swamy

  • Prime Minister addressed the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of Shri Ramalinga Swamy also known as Vallalar.
  • Vallalār, Ramalinga Swamigal and Ramalinga Adigal, was one of the most famous Tamil Saiva Saints and also one of the greatest Tamil poets of the 19th century and belongs to a line of Tamil saints known as “gnana siddhars.”
  • Vallalar is one of country’s most respected Saints who walked the earth in the 19th century and his spiritual insights continue to inspire millions.
  • He said, Vallalar’s impact is global and several organizations are working on his thoughts and ideals.
  • On this pious occasion, the Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to fulfilling Vallalar’s ideals and urged everyone to spread his message of love, kindness, and justice.

Nobel Prize 2023 in Literature

  • Norwegian author Jon Fosse has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable, said the Swedish Academy.
  • It added that Fosse is today one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world and has become increasingly recognized for his prose.
  • The human condition is the central theme of Fosse’s body of work, irrespective of genre, it said.
  • The Nobel Prize committee said that Jon Fosse presents everyday situations that are instantly recognizable in people’s lives.
  • Fosse’s radical reduction of language and dramatic action expresses the most powerful human emotions of anxiety and powerlessness in the simplest terms, it said praising the author.
  • Fosse has now joined an illustrious list of past winners that ranges from Toni Morrison to Ernest Hemingway.

India and UAE Forge Historic Partnership

  • In a significant stride towards bolstering digital payments and financial inclusion in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has inked a landmark agreement with Al Etihad Payments (AEP), an indirect subsidiary of the Central Bank of UAE.
  • The strategic partnership paves the way for the implementation of the Domestic Card Scheme (DCS) in the UAE, powered by India’s highly RuPay card network.
  • Under the agreement, NIPL and AEP will collaborate closely to construct, deploy, and operationalize the UAE’s national domestic card scheme, which aims to accelerate the growth of e-commerce and digital transactions, advance financial inclusion, and align with the UAE’s ambitious digitization agenda.
  • This partnership also seeks to diversify payment options, reduce transaction costs, and enhance the UAE’s global competitiveness in the payments industry.
  • RuPay, a secure and widely accepted card payment network indigenous to India, will serve as the foundation of the UAE’s DCS.
  • RuPay cards encompass debit, credit, and prepaid options, with over 750 million cards currently in circulation.

PATA Travel Mart 2023

  • The Ministry of Tourism, India, took center stage as it organized the inaugural ceremony for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart 2023 in the vibrant city of New Delhi.
  • The 46th edition of this prestigious event is being held at the magnificent International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) within Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • Running from October 4th to 6th, 2023, this event serves as a global gathering of tourism professionals and business stakeholders.
  • Importantly, this physical edition marks the return of the Travel Mart after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

IREDA Pavilion at “AtoZero ASEAN Summit”

  • Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof inaugurated Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) pavilion, at the AtoZero (Accelerate to Net Zero) ASEAN Summit, being organized from 4th to 6th October 2023 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Chairman & Managing Director of IREDA, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, accompanied by senior officials, also graced the inauguration ceremony.
  • Highlighted IREDA’s role and achievements in advancing renewable energy initiatives in India.
  • It serves as a platform for IREDA to collaborate with international partners and showcase the country’s progress in renewable energy development

RBI Appoints Muneesh Kapur as Executive Director

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the appointment of Muneesh Kapur as an Executive Director (ED).
  • This significant appointment brings Mr. Kapur into a key leadership position within the central bank.
  • Before his promotion to the role of Executive Director, Muneesh Kapur held the position of Adviser-in-Charge within the Monetary Policy Department.

  • Past recipients include renowned authors such as Anita Desai, Mark Tully, Amitav Ghosh, Ruskin Bond, and Girish Karnad.
  • Ambai, a distinguished feminist writer, is celebrated for her courageous exploration of the stereotyping of women in society through her literary works.
  • Her thought-provoking narratives have challenged traditional norms and sparked conversations about gender roles and expectations.
  • In 2021, Ambai received the Sahitya Akademi award for her remarkable collection of short stories titled Sivappu Kazhutthudan Oru Patchaiparavai (A Red-Necked Green Bird).

Asian Games

  • At the Hangzhou Asian Games in China, India amassed a total of historic 86 medals, including 21 gold, 32 silver, and 33 bronze.
  • India is currently in fourth place in the medal tally. This is India’s best-ever performance at the Asian Games surpassing the previous best of 70 medals at the 18th edition Asian Games in Jakarta.
  • In Archery, Indian men’s compound archery team beat South Korea by a score of 235-230  to win gold.

  • Earlier the trio of Jyoti, Parneet, and Aditi secured Gold in the women’s team compound event prevailing over Chinese Taipei with a score line of 230-228.
  • In Squash, Indian mixed doubles pair Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu clinched the gold medal after defeating the Malaysian pair.
  •  Saurav Ghosal settles with a silver against Eain Yow NG of Malaysia in the men’s individual match.
