Nobel Peace Prize 2023

  • Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women.
  • She remains in jail as she becomes the 19th woman to win the Nobel peace Prize.
  • She is among the leading human rights activists in Iran.
  • Ms Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times, and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.
  • The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.
  • The prize worth around 1 million US dollars will be presented in Oslo on December 10th, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, who founded the awards in his 1895 will.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Yak Churpi’ Receives GI Tag

  • Slightly sour and salty churpi, a naturally fermented cheese prepared from the milk of Arunachali yak, nurtured in the high-altitude areas of Arunachal Pradesh, has recently received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • This recognition not only celebrates the culinary heritage of the region but also plays a vital role in the conservation of the yak population in the Himalayan region.
  • Churpi, rich in protein, has been a lifeline for tribal yak herders in the harsh, vegetation-starved, cold, and hilly mountainous regions of the state.

Madhya Pradesh To Provide 35% Reservation For Women

  • In a significant step towards promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Madhya Pradesh government has introduced a groundbreaking policy.
  • This policy mandates that 35% of all state government job positions (excluding those in the Forest Department) must be reserved for women.
  • This progressive amendment modifies the Madhya Pradesh Civil Services (Special Provision for Appointment of Women) Rules of 1997.
  • The official notification specifies, “Regardless of any provisions in existing service rules, 35% of all job positions within the state’s service (with the exception of the Forest Department) shall be reserved for women during direct recruitment.
  • This reservation will be implemented horizontally and compartment-wise.” This announcement is not only significant due to its dedication to gender equality but also because it introduces the novel concepts of “horizontal” and “compartment-wise” reservations.
  • Horizontal reservation is a concept aimed at providing equal opportunities to various categories of beneficiaries, such as women, veterans, the transgender community, and individuals with disabilities, across different segments or compartments of government job positions.
  • Compartment-wise reservation means that the 35% quota for women will be applied in a manner that considers different departments or sectors separately, ensuring that women have access to a diverse range of government job opportunities.

First High-Tech Sports Training Center

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the nation’s inaugural state-of-the-art sports training center for people with disabilities in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
  • This facility is named in honor of the former Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and is geared towards promoting equitable access to sports, nurturing talent, and inspiring participation in a range of athletic pursuits.
  • Disabled individuals from across the country now have the opportunity to practice and train at the Atal Bihari Training Center for Disability Sports.
  • This center signifies a significant stride towards ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the same sporting opportunities, enabling them to cultivate their talents and engage in a variety of athletic disciplines.

Prof. Dr Joyeeta Gupta Receives Spinoza Prize

  • Indian-origin professor Dr Joyeeta Gupta has received the Spinoza Prize, the highest distinction in Dutch science for her work in the field of climate change at a ceremony in the Netherlands.
  • The prize was presented to her by the Netherlands’ Minister for Education, Science, and Culture, Robert Dijkgraaf at The Hague on Wednesday.
  • The Dutch Research Council (NWO) prize is worth 1.5 million euros which Gupta intends to spend on scientific research and activities related to knowledge utilisation.
  • Joyeeta Gupta is a Dutch environmental scientist who is professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam.

Millets Farmer Producer Organizations Exhibition

  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare organized a Millets Farmer Producer Organizations (FPO) Exhibition at the BSF Camp in Chhawala, Delhi. The event was to promote Millet among paramilitary personnel and acquaint them with diverse, home-grown millet products by FPO.
  • The 34 Millet FPOs gathered in this event are amplifying the Millet Movement of the country.
  • The event had over 30 FPO with ready-to-cook options and ready-to-eat products for paramilitary officers, staff, and their families.
  • The exhibition hosted roughly 1,000 attendees from various armed forces.  The event brought forth a viable and healthy alternative for everyday snacks such as noodles, ladoos, and cookies.
  • It also featured raw and broken millet grains and millet flour. BSF Mahila Pipe Band and 24 Battalion BSF Jazz Band captivated the audience with their melodious tunes.
