The Chief Minister highlighted the significance of such practical exposure in shaping the future of the youth.

Ancient Tools Found In Telangana

  • The Mulugu district of Telangana has become the stage for an unexpected archaeological revelation following the devastating floods in July 2023.
  • Amidst the aftermath of the natural disaster, a team of amateur historians stumbled upon a collection of paleolithic quartzite tools that have not only captivated the local community but also pushed back the understanding of human habitations in Telangana and central India.
  • Sriramoju Haragopal, the leader of the enthusiastic team, explained that the discovery occurred in the sand bed of a stream that had dried up after the flood.
  • The exposed tools, identified as hand axes, were found between Gurrevula and Bhupatipuram villages in Mulugu district.
image 261
  • The significant find was a stone axe measuring 15.5cm in length, 11cm in width, and 5.5cm in thickness. Eleswaram Janardanachari, a dedicated researcher, was the one who made this remarkable discovery.
  • According to paleontologist Ravi Korisettar, the stone axe belongs to the Lower Paleolithic period, dating back approximately 30 lakh (3 million) years ago. The Paleolithic Age, also known as the Old Stone Age or Early Stone Age, spans an extensive period dating back to about 33 lakh (3.3 million) years BC and lasting for 10,000 years. This newfound artifact adds a significant layer to the historical timeline of human existence in the region.
image 262
  • The identification of the tools was based on various factors such as chipping style, material, and size.
  • Haragopal explained that Paleolithic hunter-gatherers commonly used heavy quartzite for crafting large tools like these hand axes. Similar tools have been discovered worldwide and were likely utilized for cutting wood and hunting animals for sustenance.

Green Fuels Alliance India

  • At the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2024, Denmark unveiled the Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI), a pivotal initiative under the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) signed between India and Denmark in 2020.
  • The GFAI aims to accelerate collaboration in the sustainable energy solutions sector, aligning with the joint global objective of carbon neutrality.
image 263
  • Led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate-General of Denmark in India, the GFAI focuses on advancing the green fuels sector, particularly green hydrogen. Nine leading Danish organizations, including Maersk, Novozymes, and Danfoss, commit as founding members, highlighting a strategic approach to fostering innovation and collaboration.
  • The primary goal of the GFAI is to establish an ecosystem promoting collaboration among businesses, government entities, research institutions, and financial stakeholders. This initiative bolsters India’s efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2070, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy growth.
  • The GFAI’s advisory board includes key entities such as the India Hydrogen Alliance and the Danish Energy Agency. This alliance underscores the commitment to sustainable energy solutions, further cementing the bond between India and Denmark in the pursuit of a greener future.

U.S. Launches Peregrine-1 Lander To Moon

  • Peregrine-1 lunar lander, operated by private firm Astrobotic, successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, marking the first American lunar mission in 51 years.
  • Scheduled to land on February 23, the mission, conducted under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, aims to study the Moon’s surface environment in preparation for upcoming human missions.
image 264
  • The Peregrine lander carries five NASA payloads and 15 other components designed to measure radiation, surface and subsurface water ice, magnetic fields, and the exosphere.
  • Notably, it includes the first Latin American scientific instruments destined for the lunar surface. Additionally, five miniature moon rovers, non-scientific payloads like a Bitcoin-loaded coin, and a “lunar dream capsule” filled with messages from children worldwide are part of the mission.
image 265
  • The launch utilizes the Vulcan Centaur rocket, a pivotal development for ULA, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, competing with SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
  • This mission, with its memorial payload containing remains and DNA associated with Star Trek, holds emotional and historic weight.
  • Astrobotic is the first of three US companies deploying landers through CLPS, with Intuitive Machines and Firefly to follow. NASA’s involvement as a customer, not operator, reflects a cost-effective approach, while the Vulcan rocket’s success is critical for ULA’s plans.

Paris Olympic Quotas

  • In Shooting, Varun Tomar and Esha Singh secured India’s 14th and 15th Olympic quota places, with gold medals in the 10m Air Pistol event of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • India opened its account with three medals, including a team gold, at the continental event’s opening day.
image 266
  • The 20-year-old Varun Tomar shot 239.6 in the men’s 10m air pistol final to claim the top position, while Arjun Cheema won the silver medal with a score of 237.3.
  • Mongolia’s Davaakhuu Enkhtaivan (217.2) won the bronze medal.
  • In the women’s final, Esha Singh finished first with a score of 243.1. Pakistan’s Talat Kishmala won silver medal with 236.3 and took the second quota place on offer. However, India’s Rhythm Sangwan missed out as she took the bronze while Surbhi Rao finished sixth.
  • A total of 16 quota places for the Paris Olympics are available at the continental showpiece in Jakarta. The 10m air pistol events for men and women have four quotas on offer with a maximum of three for the Indian shooters.

African Raptors

  • A new study has revealed that 37 out of 42 African raptor species analyzed have experienced significant population declines of around 88% in the past 40 years.
  • Out of these, 29 species constituting 69% have seen drops over 3 generation lengths that qualify them as globally threatened under IUCN criteria of endangerment.
  • The analysis found 6 raptor species endemic or near-endemic to Africa already overshot the minimum threshold of loss of habitat and numbers that signals heightened extinction risk.
image 267
  • There is pressing need to reassess the status of over 10 declining yet currently least-concern species which might be more endangered than categorized.
  • Habitat destruction, loss of nesting sites and prey base along with poisoning and hunting have accelerator declines, especially in West Africa’s high poverty, corruption and misgovernance contexts.
  • Study notes annually around 5 million hectares forest cover is lost continent-wide to agriculture which has expanded nearly thrice more in West Africa since 1970s, squeezing raptor capacities.
  • With only 14% land under Protected Areas, declining birds of prey face intensifying competition and pressures even within reserves as human footprint expands.
  • The predators also tackle issues like electrocution from infrastructure, vehicle collisions etc. Slow breeding capabilities impedes their recovery too.
  • Their falling numbers can trigger instability in food chains, disease outbreaks and loss of critical ecological services like scavenging animal carcasses.
  • The ominous population trends underscore why habitat conservation and community support for these apex but threatened avian hunters is vital before several symbolically and ecologically vital species dwindle into extinction.
