Over Last Year, About 350 NCC Cadets Joined Navy As Agniveers

  • About 350 NCC cadets have joined the Indian Navy as Agniveers over the last year, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said on Saturday, asserting that the Corps has consistently produced dedicated and determined bravehearts who “excel in the service of Bharat”.
  • Addressing a group of cadets during a function at the NCC Republic Day Camp here, he also said that “a large number of women cadets” have joined the Navy as women Agniveers.
  • Prior to his address, the Navy chief witnessed a parade by participants of the NCC RD Camp, visited the Flag Area and interacted with some of the cadets at Delhi Cantonment.
  • Agniveers are enrolled under the Agnipath scheme introduced by the government in 2022.

DRDO Launches Indigenous Assault Rifle ‘Ugram’ For Armed Forces

  • The DRDO has launched an indigenous assault rifle named ‘Ugram’, intended to meet the operational requirements of armed forces, paramilitary, and state police entities.
  • The rifle, with a calibre of 7.62 x 51 mm, has been designed, developed, and manufactured in collaboration with a private industry partner.
  • The first operational prototype of the rifle was unveiled at the DRDO’s Armament and Combat Engineering Systems in Pune. It has an effective range of 500 m and weighs less than four kilograms.
  • The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), it was said “The ARDE developed 7.62x51mm Assault rifle UGRAM through private industry was launched by Dr S V Gade, Director General ARDE, other senior scientists of the lab and industrial representatives.”

Singapore To Contribute Troops To US-led Maritime Security Force In Red Sea

  • Singapore will contribute troops to a US-led international maritime security force formed to respond to attacks by Yemen’s Houthis against merchant vessels in the Red Sea, a senior minister of the Asian financial and trade hub said.
  • Singapore is in the midst of a major shipping route to north Asia from the rest of the world and plays a critical trade financing role that is widely dominated by China, Japan and South Korea as well as the rest of the world.
  • Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen told the Parliament that the Singapore Armed Forces’ deployment will involve sending a team from the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Information Fusion Centre to support information sharing, and a team of planners to work with international partners on operational plans.

Rajnath Singh Holds ‘Fruitful Discussions’ With UK

  • Rajnath Singh met his British counterpart Grant Shapps and held “fruitful discussions” on a wide range of issues related to defence cooperation, security and also on enhancing defence industrial cooperation. Singh’s visit comes after a gap of 22 years, with the last one by an Indian defence minister to the UK dating back to January 2002.
  • “In substantive terms, the visit will seek to deepen military cooperation and defence industrial partnerships with the UK by building on the November 2023 Defence Consultative Group meeting in Delhi at the level of Secretaries and the inaugural meeting of the 2+2 Foreign and Defence Dialogue at the level of Joint Secretaries in October 2023.”

IAF’s C-130 J Aircraft Achieves Milestone Night Landing

  • IAF reached a significant milestone with a night landing by an IAF C-130 J aircraft at the Kargil airstrip. Demonstrating prowess in challenging terrains, the mission incorporated innovative terrain masking techniques.
  • The night landing at Kargil involved strategic terrain masking techniques during the flight. The IAF stated, “In a first, an IAF C-130 J aircraft recently carried out a night landing at the Kargil airstrip. Employing terrain masking en route, the exercise also dovetailed with a training mission for the Garuds.”
  • The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft.

4 More NCC Units To Be Raised In J&K And Ladakh

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal to raise four more National Cadet Corps (NCC) Units in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The approval includes one Mixed (Boys & Girls) Army Battalion each at Udhampur (J&K), Kupwara (J&K) and Kargil (Ladakh), and one Air Squadron at Udhampur (J&K).
  • Resultantly, in addition to the existing 27,870 cadets, the strength in J&K and Ladakh will increase by 12,860, which is a 46.1% rise. Currently, the Directorate has two Group Headquarters, with a total of 10 NCC Units, covering all the three geographical regions. The expansion will boost the morale of the youth in the region, who will contribute significantly to nation building.
