International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026
Every year on 11 February, the world observes the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Initiated by the United Nations, the day aims to promote equal access and full participation of women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It serves as a reminder that gender equality in scientific fields is essential for innovation and sustainable development.
The theme for 2026, โSynergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls,โ emphasizes collaboration across multiple disciplines. It underlines the importance of combining Artificial Intelligence, scientific education, social research, and financial investment to create inclusive opportunities for women in emerging sectors.
Despite progress, gender disparity in science continues to persist. Women make up only about 31% of researchers worldwide. In Artificial Intelligence-related careers, their representation drops further to around 22%. Although nearly 46% of young women enroll in higher education, only 35% complete degrees in science-based subjects. These figures highlight the urgent need to strengthen policies, mentorship, and financial support systems to bridge the gap.
MHA Issues New Guidelines on Vande Mataram and National Anthem
The Ministry of Home Affairs has released updated instructions regarding the sequence of singing Vande Mataram and the National Anthem at official functions. According to the new directive, when both are performed at the same event, all six stanzas of Vande Mataram must be sung before the National Anthem. The complete rendition of the song takes approximately 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, adding historical significance to the guidelines. The government has specified that the song should be performed during events such as:
- Unfurling of the National Flag
- Cultural and ceremonial functions (excluding parades)
- Arrival of the President at public events
- Important gatherings attended by Ministers
Composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the 1870s and later included in his novel Anandamath, Vande Mataram became a powerful symbol during Indiaโs freedom movement. In 1950, the Constituent Assembly recognized it as the National Song, while Jana Gana Mana was adopted as the National Anthem.
India Honoured as Country of the Year at BIOFACH 2026
India has earned global recognition in the field of organic agriculture by being named Country of the Year at BIOFACH 2026, the worldโs premier trade fair for organic products. The event is scheduled to take place from 10 to 13 February 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany.
This distinction highlights Indiaโs growing influence as a dependable supplier of certified organic produce. The countryโs participation is being coordinated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Indiaโs pavilion at BIOFACH 2026 will span 1,074 square metres, making it one of the largest national exhibits at the event. The pavilion will feature 67 participants, including exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), cooperatives, organic testing laboratories, state agencies, and commodity boards. APEDA has been consistently participating in the trade fair for over ten years, strengthening Indiaโs presence in the global organic market.
No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
On February 10, 2026, opposition members initiated a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The proposal will now proceed as per parliamentary procedures.
The removal of the Lok Sabha Speaker is governed by Article 94(c) of the Constitution of India. It requires a resolution supported by a majority of all the existing members of the House. This process differs from a no-confidence motion against the government and applies solely to the Lok Sabha.
Under Article 94, the Speaker vacates office if:
- They cease to be a Member of the Lok Sabha.
- They resign by submitting a written letter to the Deputy Speaker.
- They are removed through a resolution passed by a majority of all current members.
Historically, motions for removal of a Speaker have been introduced three times:
- 1954 โ Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar
- 1966 โ Hukam Singh
- 1987 โ Balram Jakhar
IndiaโNetherlands Launch Hydrogen Fellowship Programme
India continues to strengthen its commitment to clean energy innovation. On February 10, 2026, India and the Netherlands jointly introduced a Hydrogen Fellowship Programme and expanded academic collaboration in green hydrogen research.
The initiative, launched by Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, aims to build national expertise in hydrogen technologies. It will enable Indian researchers to receive advanced training within the Netherlandsโ hydrogen ecosystem.
This fellowship programme represents deepening cooperation between the two nations in climate-focused research and sustainable energy solutions. Green hydrogen is considered vital for long-term energy security and achieving global climate targets.
Aditya Pandya: Indiaโs Youngest Male Analog Astronaut
Seventeen-year-old Aditya Pandya has made history by becoming Indiaโs youngest male analog astronaut. He successfully completed a simulated lunar mission conducted by AAKA Space Studio from February 1 to 8, 2026, in Dholavira, Kutch, Gujarat.
The mission recreated conditions similar to those expected on the Moon, including isolation and autonomous operations. Such analog missions are conducted on Earth to simulate space environments and help researchers study human performance in extreme conditions.
This achievement reflects the growing interest of Indian youth in space science and highlights the countryโs expanding ecosystem for experimental space research.
