International Students Day

  • International student’s Day 2023 is observed on November 17th to honor the global student’s community.
  • International students travel long distances from their home countries to pursue higher education. International Students Day was first celebrated in 1941 in London.

  • This day is marked on the anniversary of Nazi’s invasion of a university in Prague in 1939.
  • On that night, Nazis stormed all university dormitories in Prague and in other towns as well, beating and arresting thousands of students when they were asleep, who were then taken to the prison in Pankrác and then to the military barracks in Ruzyne.

Global Fisheries Conference

  • Union Minister for Fisheries Parshottam Rupala has said that fish production has increased manifold in the last nine years due to various schemes taken up by the government.
  • Mr Rupala stated this while addressing the curtain raiser press conference in New Delhi for Global Fisheries Conference India 2023, which will be held on the 21st and 22nd of this month in Ahmadabad, Gujarat.
  • The two-day Conference will be held to celebrate ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture Wealth’ on the occasion of World Fisheries Day.

  • He said India is the 3rd largest fish-producing country with around 8 percent share in global fish production.
  • Mr Rupala said that the fisheries sector contributes to India’s economy in a big way and provides livelihood for over 2.8 crore fishers and fish farmers at the primary level.
  • An average of 38 lakh fishers per year are insured under the Group Accident Insurance Scheme.
  • The aim of the conference is to reach out to the various domestic and global fisheries sector stakeholders to build partnerships, fostering collaborative efforts and promoting the Indian Fisheries sector.
  • It is also an opportunity to explore the Research and Development and opportunities that are shaping the fisheries landscape.

Global South Summit

  • India is set to host the second Voice of Global South Summit on Friday in a virtual format.
  • The summit would focus on sharing the key outcomes achieved in various G20 meetings over the course of India’s Presidency with the countries of the Global South.

  • The challenges posed by global developments are also likely to be discussed. The Summit will serve as a platform to discuss ways to sustain the momentum generated toward the common aspiration of a more inclusive, representative and progressive world order.
  • The summit will be structured into 10 sessions. The inaugural and concluding sessions will be at the Government level. The sessions will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The theme of the Inaugural Leaders’ Session is Together, for Everyone’s Growth, with Everyone’s Trust and that of the Concluding Leaders’ Session is Global South- Together for One Future.
  • The first edition of the Voice of Global South Summit was hosted by India in virtual format in the month of January this year.
  • The summit brought together 125 countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform.

‘WETEX And Dubai Solar Show’

  • Thirty Indian companies associated with the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) made its presence at the ‘WETEX and Dubai Solar Show’ in Dubai from November 15th to 17th, 2023.
  • Engaging in sectors such as power, energy, water, solar, and engineering, these companies explored bilateral trade opportunities with the UAE.
  • The India Pavilion was inaugurated by Mr. Sunil Kumar, Consul at the Consulate General of India in Dubai.

  • Pakistan-based cleantech startup She-Guard emerged victorious at the ‘ClimateLaunchpad Asia-Pacific’ finals, showcasing their innovative biodegradable and plastic-free sanitary product.
  • The startup’s mission is to transform banana crop waste into affordable, eco-friendly sanitary napkins, addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change, public health and solid waste management in Pakistan.

  • Mehreen Raza, the founder and CEO of She-Guard, expressed gratitude for the support of ClimateLaunchpad and emphasized the importance of ensuring that every woman can access basic menstrual hygiene.
  • Raza highlighted the startup’s dedication to achieving this goal in a sustainable manner.

Lifetime Disturbing The Peace Award

  • World-renowned author Salman Rushdie, celebrated for groundbreaking works like ‘The Satanic Verses,’ received the inaugural ‘Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award‘ from the Vaclav Havel Center.
  • Simultaneously, Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah was honored with the ‘Disturbing the Peace Award for a Courageous Writer at Risk’ during a ceremony.

  • Recently, Rushdie unveiled the publication of his latest book titled ‘Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.
  • The Vaclav Havel Center also bestowed the ‘Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk‘ upon Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah.
  • Despite being imprisoned, Abdel-Fattah remains a symbol of resistance against Egypt’s authoritarian regime.
  • Acclaimed author Adhaf Soueif, Abdel-Fattah’s aunt, accepted the award on his behalf, highlighting his appreciation for the award’s name, “Disturbing the Peace.”

AIFF-FIFA Talent Academy

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) to establish a world-class football academy is set to materialize in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on November 21, 2023.
  • The AIFF-FIFA academy, initiated under the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), will be inaugurated by Mr. Arsene Wenger, Chief of Global Football Development at FIFA.
  • Under the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, the academy aims to provide a world-class platform for nurturing young football talent.

‘Nest’ Initiative
