World Refugee Day 2026: Promoting Hope and Protection
Every year on 20 June, the international community observes World Refugee Day to recognize the struggles and achievements of people who have been forced to leave their homes due to war, violence, persecution, and human rights abuses. The day highlights the resilience and determination of refugees as they rebuild their lives despite immense challenges.
The theme for World Refugee Day 2026, “Until Everyone is Safe,” emphasizes the global responsibility to ensure protection and security for displaced populations. The observance also raises awareness about the difficulties refugees face while escaping conflict zones and adapting to new environments. Through educational campaigns and public engagement, the day encourages compassion, inclusion, and support for those seeking safety and dignity.
UAE Introduces Minimum Age for Social Media Use
In a significant step toward enhancing online child safety, the United Arab Emirates has established 15 years as the minimum age for creating and operating personal social media accounts. Under the new regulations, children below the age of 15 will not be permitted to independently use social networking platforms.
Young users aged between 15 and 16 will still be allowed access but will benefit from additional safeguards. These measures include age-appropriate content recommendations, restrictions on communication with strangers, screen-time controls, stronger privacy protections, and parental supervision features. The initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment for children and teenagers.
Uzbekistan Joins the New Development Bank
Uzbekistan has become the first country from Central Asia to join the New Development Bank (NDB), marking an important milestone in the institution’s expansion. The country officially became a shareholder on 5 June 2026 after completing all necessary membership procedures.
Established by the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—the NDB was created to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies. Since beginning operations in 2015, the bank has approved numerous projects across sectors such as transportation, renewable energy, water resources, urban development, and social infrastructure.
Headquartered in Shanghai, China, the NDB welcomes membership from all United Nations member states. Uzbekistan’s entry strengthens the bank’s presence in Eurasia and highlights growing international interest in multilateral development cooperation.
India Launches First Commercial Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for India’s first commercial-scale coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility in Odisha. Located at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district, the project involves an investment of over ₹25,000 crore and will be implemented by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL).
The facility will utilize indigenous technology to convert coal into ammonium nitrate, an important industrial chemical. The project is expected to produce approximately 2,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate daily, reducing dependence on imports and enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Coal gasification, the core technology behind the project, transforms coal into synthesis gas or syngas, a mixture primarily containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. This innovative approach supports India’s efforts to diversify industrial feedstocks and improve resource utilization.
Vivek Aggarwal Elected FATF Vice President
Indian Administrative Service officer Vivek Aggarwal has been elected Vice President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), becoming the first Indian to hold this prestigious position. His term will run from July 2026 to June 2027.

India’s Mission to Eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047
India has set an ambitious goal of eliminating sickle cell anaemia by 2047 through the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission. Launched on 1 July 2023 in Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh, the mission focuses on large-scale screening, diagnosis, awareness, counselling, and patient care.
Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary blood disorder caused by abnormal hemoglobin known as hemoglobin S. The disease affects the shape and function of red blood cells, reducing their ability to transport oxygen effectively throughout the body.
The mission operates through three major pillars: Health Promotion, Prevention, and Holistic Management. These include public awareness campaigns, genetic counselling, universal screening programs, and comprehensive medical support for affected individuals.
By June 2026, more than seven crore people had been screened under the initiative, demonstrating significant progress toward the long-term objective of eliminating the disease and improving public health outcomes across the country.
