World Heart Day

  • World Heart Day, it is an annual event held on September 29th to raise awareness about heart disease and promote healthy heart habits.
  • This year’s theme for the World Heart Day is “Use Heart, Know Heart.” This helps us talk about the importance of a healthy heart.

  • In 1999 the World Heart Federation (WHF), in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the establishment of World Heart Day.
  • The idea for this annual event was conceived by Antoni Bayés de Luna, President of WHF from 1997–99.
  • World Heart Day was originally (until 2011) observed on the last Sunday in September, with the first celebration taking place on September 24, 2000.

Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav

  • Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav, a 75 day-long event to celebrate the Indian languages started in Lucknow.
  • Padma shree awardees and representatives of different Indian languages are taking part in the program which includes Bahubhashi Sangoshthi i.e. Multi-laguage conference and play based on Ramayana.
  • The festival will continue from 28 September to 11 December which is birthday of Famous Tamil poet Subrahmanyam Bharti and celebrated as Indian Languages day.

  • central government has decided to celebrate Indian languages for 75 days under The Indian Languages Festival and many programs will be organised throughout the state to celebrate different Indian languages.

Global Innovation Index 2023

  • India has retained 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2023.
  • NITI Aayog said India retained the 40th rank out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index 2023 rankings published by the World Intellectual Property Organization. It said India has been on a rising trajectory over the past several years in the Global Innovation Index, from a rank of 81 in 2015 to 40 in 2023.

  •  NITI Aayog said the consistent improvement in the GII ranking is owing to the immense knowledge capital, the vibrant start-up ecosystem, and the work done by the public and private research organizations. It said Atal Innovation Mission has played a major role in expanding the Innovation ecosystem.
  • NITI Aayog has been working to ensure the optimization of national efforts for bringing policy-led innovation in different areas such as electric vehicles, biotechnology, nanotechnology, space, and alternative energy sources. It has also played a role in expanding the innovation eco-system in states and districts.

Dr. MS Swaminathan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness at the demise of architect of India’s Green Revolution, Dr. MS Swaminathan.
  • His groundbreaking work in agriculture transformed the lives of millions at a very critical period in India’s history, and ensured food security for the nation.
  • Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan (7 August 1925 – 28 September 2023) was an Indian agronomist, agricultural scientist, plant geneticist, administrator, and humanitarian.

  • Swaminathan was a global leader of the green revolution.
  • He has been called the main architect of the green revolution in India for his leadership and role in introducing and further developing high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice.
  • Director general of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines was instrumental in his being awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987, recognized as one of the highest honours in the field of agriculture.
  • The United Nations Environment Programme has called him “The Father of Economic Ecology”.

Taiwan Unveils First Domestically Developed Submarine

  • Taiwan has unveiled its first domestically developed submarine. The vessel was officially named “Narwhal” in English and “Hai Kun” in Mandarin after a mythical massive fish that can also fly.
  • The accomplishment has been hailed as a significant milestone as Taipei works to boost its military deterrence in the face of a growing threat from China.

  • Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen presided over the launch ceremony in the port city of Kaohsiung.
  • Narwhal is expected to enter service in 2025, joining two existing submarines purchased from the Netherlands in the 1980s.
  • According to reports, the island nation hopes to deploy at least two such domestically developed submarines by 2027, and eventually operate a fleet of 10 submarines.
  • Taiwan has made the indigenous submarine program a key part of an ambitious project to modernise its armed forces.

Pitra Paksha Mela

  • In Bihar, the world-famous Pitra Paksha Mela will begin in Gaya city. The main inaugural function has been organized at Vishnupad Temple.
  • The fortnight event occupies significance in Hindu religion as lakhs of people from across the country and abroad reach here to offer prayers for their departed soul on the banks of Falgu River.
  • Pitra Paksha is dedicated to the departed souls and is meant for pleasing them, asking for forgiveness, and ridding oneself of the Pitra Dosha.
  • During this period rituals like Shraddh, Tarpan, and Pind Daan are performed to please the departed soul from the cycle of birth, life, and death.
  • These rituals are performed at the Falgu river and after that special prayer is offered at Vishnupad Temple, Gaya on special Vedis. Several Vedis have been set up for rituals.
  • The Gaya district administration has set up a tent city near VishnuPad temple for devotees. The East Central Railway has arranged stoppage of severa trains at Gaya junction. For the convenience of devotees two Pitra Paksha special trains have also been started from Rani Kamlapati Station and Jabalpur station for Gaya.

  • SP Singh, the Principal of the UPSRTC Model Driving Training and Research Institute, has earned a remarkable distinction by securing a place in the prestigious India Book of Records.
  • This recognition is a testament to his exceptional contributions, particularly through his innovative ‘Jhaadu Daan’ (broom donation) initiative, which aligns with the nationwide Swachh Bharat Campaign.
  • Singh’s commitment to promoting cleanliness and hygiene has made a substantial impact on various districts, fostering a cleaner environment and empowering communities.
  • ‘Jhaadu Daan’ initiative started in 2014, coinciding with the launch of the Swachh Bharat campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The primary objective of this initiative is to provide essential tools for maintaining cleanliness in various surroundings.

“Made In Nagaland” App

  • Nagaland Police has launched “made in Nagaland” app to fight against Drugs and Extortion in the state.
  • This app will enable the general public or victims to give information complaints regarding Drugs and Extortion.
  • The State Police said information can be given online without visiting the police station while anonymous complaints can also be registered.

  • It said, details of drugs, underground groups, extortion amount can be given if available through the app with information regarding the suspects name, phone number, address, photographs, videos, audio or any relevant data.
  • The police assured that information shared is secure and particulars of the Informant or Complainant will be kept secret and confidential.
  • Police also added that provision to contact Nagaland Police by whatsapp is available in app as well as website.

‘Sankalp Saptaah’

  • PM to launch a unique week-long programme for Aspirational Blocks called ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ on 30th September
  • ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ to be observed in all 500 Aspirational Blocks of 329 Districts across the country.
  • Each day in ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ is dedicated to a specific development theme on which all Aspirational Blocks will work.
  • ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ is linked to the effective implementation of Aspirational Blocks Programme.
  • The nationwide programme was launched by the Prime Minister on January 7, 2023.  It aims to improve governance at the block level inorder to enhance the quality of life of citizens.
  • For implementing the Aspirational Blocks Programme and to prepare an effective block development strategy, chintan shivirs were organised at village and block levels across the country. The ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ is a culmination of these chintan shivirs.

CRIIIO 4 GOOD

  • Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched ‘CRIIIO 4 GOOD’, a new online, life skills learning modules, to promote gender equality among girls and boys.
  • ‘CRIIIO 4 GOOD’ is a series of 8 cricket-based animation films to promote gender parity, equip girls with life skills and encourage their participation in sports.
  • The programme was launched in association with the International Cricket Council, UNICEF, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
  • CRIIIO 4 Good Modules to be a medium to empower girl child and spread awareness about gender equity.

Asian Games

  • India has accumulated an overall tally of 25 medals- 6 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze in the Asian Games 2023, being held at Hangzhou, China.
  •  The latest gold was won by the trio of Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Shiva Narwal in the men’s 10m air pistol team event.

  • India’s Anush Agarwalla bagged his second equestrian medal, a bronze, after ranking third in the dressage intermediate I freestyle event.
