Women In the Army 

  • The number of women in Indian Army medical and non-medical cadres is as under:
  • The total number of women in Indian Army medical cadres, as on 01st July 2023:   
  • Army Medical Corps (AMC) – 1,212
  • Army Dental Corps (ADC) – 168
  • Military Nursing Service (MNS) – 3,841
  • The total number of women officers in the Indian Army (excluding AMC, ADC and MNS) as on 01st January 2023 is 1,733.
  • The major initiatives to increase the number of women in the Indian Army are given below:
  • 20 vacancies for Women Army cadets per year have been allotted in National Defence Academy, Pune with effect from July 2022.
  • Short Service Commission has 90 vacancies for women including 10 additional vacancies increased with effect from June 2023.
  • Approval has been given, since March 2023 for the induction of women officers into the following branches:
  • Artillery units.
  • Remount and Veterinary Corps.
  • Entry of Women officers as pilots in Army Aviation has commenced with effect from June 2021.
  • Enrolment of women as Other Ranks in the Corps of Military Police in the Indian Army has commenced since 2019.

Navy Chief On 3-day Visit To Oman To Boost Bilateral Military Ties  

  • Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar is on a three-day visit to Oman with an aim to expand bilateral military cooperation. He was welcomed at the airport in Muscat by Rear Admiral Saif bin Nassir bin Mohsin Al-Rahbi, the Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman.
  • During the visit, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) is scheduled to meet the military leadership of Oman and interact with institutions of higher defence studies of the country, the Indian Navy said on Twitter.
  • Coinciding with the visit of the CNS, India’s indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam arrived at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat.

Myanmar Junta Extends State Of Emergency By Another Six Months    

  • Members of Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council on Monday decided to extend the state of emergency in the country and the term of the junta led by Min Aung Hlaing for another 6 months. The decision was taken during Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council meeting in Naypyidaw.
  • As the term of the Myanmar junta led by Min Aung Hlaing expired on Monday, the junta chief presented a report to council members sharing details regarding two-and-half years of military rule as is needed by the army-drafted 2008 Constitution. He stressed that there was still “unrest” in Myanmar.
  • In November 2020, the National League for Democracy (NLD) secured victory in Myanmar’s parliamentary elections. However, less than three months later, the Myanmar military carried out a coup and imprisoned Aung San Suu Kyi. Currently, she is serving a prison sentence which totals 33 years.
