President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates Advanced Naval Stealth Frigate ‘Vindhyagiri’     

  • President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Kolkata to inaugurate an advanced stealth frigate for the Indian Navy. President Murmu launched the ship at the dock on the banks of the river Hooghly.
  • She also said that the production of the advanced frigate was a symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat and of technological advancement made by the country.
  • “The launch is a symbol of self-reliance in shipbuilding,” the President said adding that projects like this reflect India’s “commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement”.
  • This frigate marks the sixth vessel out of seven that are part of ‘Project 17 Alpha’ aimed at strengthening the Navy’s fleet. Notably, the first five ships of the project were introduced between 2019 and 2022.
  • Nearly 75% of the orders, especially for equipment and systems for the P17A ships have come from domestic defence firms, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
  • These guided missile frigates, known as P17A ships, boast impressive specifications, with a length of 149 meters, displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes, and a top speed of 28 knots. Importantly, they are designed to address threats across air, surface, and sub-surface domains.

US Expected To Expand South Korea And Japan Security Limit During Trilateral Summit 

  • At their first trilateral summit, the United States, South Korea, and Japan are expected to form an ongoing tripartite security system to defend the Indo-Pacific area – a move China rejects as adversarial.
  • U.S. President Joe Biden will hold a meeting at Camp David on Friday with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, hoping to tighten ties between Seoul and Tokyo amid nuclear threats from North Korea and China’s influence in the region.
  • North Korea has criticised deepening military cooperation among the three nations as part of a dangerous prelude to the creation of an “Asian version of NATO”.

US Indo-Pacific Command Official Calls On Indian Defence Intel Chief                         

  • Rear Admiral Thomas M Henderschedt, director for Intelligence (J2), US Indo-Pacific Command, called on DG Defence Intelligence Agency Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, to discuss issues of mutual interest and identify new areas for defence cooperation, according to Defence officials.
  • This visit came at a time when the US Congress delegation is on an India visit. The US Congressmen, Ro Khanna and Michael Waltz, who are also co-chairs of the House India caucus lead a bipartisan Congressional Member Delegation to India.
  • Later that day, the delegation met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He called strong bipartisan support from the US Congress “instrumental” in further elevating the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership.
