CIC Instructs Defence Ministry To Reconsider Refusal To Disclose Records On ‘Agnipath’ Scheme

  • Central Information Commission (CIC) has instructed the Defence Ministry to review its denial of disclosing records related to the Agnipath military recruitment scheme under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
  • Earlier, the Ministry had classified the files as “secret,” citing Section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act. This comes in response to a RTI application filled by Activist Vihar Durve, who contested the use of the term “secret”, alleging that the Act did not explicitly include such a classification.
  • He said merely stating that a piece of information was secret was not enough to deny the information by invoking Section 8(1)(a) of the Act.
  • Subsequently, Information Commissioner Vinod Kumar Tiwari directed the Ministry to re-evaluate the application and provide revised information or an appropriate exemption under the RTI Act.
  • The Central Information Commission is a statutory body, set up under the Right to Information Act in 2005 under the Government of India to act upon complaints from those individuals who have not been able to submit information requests to a Central Public Information Officer or State Public Information Officer due to either the officer not have been appointed, or because the respective Central Assistant Public Information Officer or State Assistant Public Information Officer refused to receive the application for information under the Right to Information Act.

Pakistan, Iran Agree To ‘De-escalate’ After Air Strikes

  • Pakistan-Iran Relations: The cabinet headed by Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister endorsed a move to re-establish full diplomatic relations with Iran.
  • Pakistan’s cabinet decided to end a standoff with Iran that saw the countries exchange missile and drone strikes at what they each said were militant targets.
  • The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, called for restraint, while China offered to mediate between the two countries. However, a phone conversation between Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has paved the way for both nations to defuse the situation.
  • The Baluchistan region shared between Pakistan and Iran, has long been a hotspot for militant activities. The recent events saw Iran carrying out a missile and drone strike on what it deemed “terrorist” targets in Pakistan, triggering a retaliatory response from Pakistan on Thursday.
  • The rare military actions escalated tensions, prompting Pakistan to recall its ambassador from Tehran and block the return of Iran’s envoy to Islamabad.
  • A collective death count of 11 — mostly women and children — was reported from both sides of the border, as per news agency AFP.
