Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron arrives at Dubai’s Port Rashid 

  • As a part of long-range training deployment, the ships of the First Training Squadron comprising INS Tir, INS Sujata and Coast Guard Ship Sarathi entered Dubai’s Port Rashid on Monday.
  • The ships were received by the Defence Attache at the Embassy of India and officials of the UAE Navy.
  • After the three ships arrived at Port Rashid, Dubai, professional interaction and a brief walkaround of the vessel were undertaken for visiting UAE naval officers.
  • The vessels are deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of their training deployment. The First Training Squadron (1TS) is based at Kochi and is part of the Southern Naval Command, the Indian Navy’s Training Command.
  • Both India and UAE are committed to moving forward in their partnership in diverse areas, including trade, investment, conventional and renewable energy, food security, health, skill development, education, culture, defence, space, consular issues and people-to-people ties.

Defence, Security Collaboration B/W India, Australia Contributed To Free, Open Indo-pacific: S Jaishankar       

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that India and Australia’s defence, security collaboration has contributed significantly to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
  • Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Australia, on Tuesday had an instructive morning with the Australian Armed Forces. The US, India and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s rising military manoeuvring in the region.
  • This is his second visit to Australia this year. The first visit was in February 2022 when he attended Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Melbourne.
  • History of India-Australia relations
  • India and Australia have commercial ties dating back to the 18th century when India played a central role in nourishing the young colony.
  • Trade with Australia came to be an important element in the operations of the East India Company in Bengal.
  • For the next half-century, Australia’s most immediate and direct links were with India rather than London, as bureaucrats, merchants, chaplains, and judges moved between the two colonies.
  • India was an important source of food and provisions for Australia; by 1840 a ship was leaving Sydney for India roughly every four days, and merchants in Calcutta grew rich from supplying the new outpost.
  • At the beginning of the 19th century, several British colonial families from India made a life for themselves in the new Australian colonies.
  • Australia and India established diplomatic relations in the pre-Independence period when the Consulate General of India was first opened as a Trade Office in Sydney in 1941.
  • India’s first High Commissioner to Australia arrived in Canberra in 1945. In March 1944, Lieutenant-General Iven Mackay was appointed Australia’s first High Commissioner to India.
  • India and Australia co-operate in various multilateral forums:
  • Australia supports India’s candidature in an expanded UN Security Council.
  • Both India and Australia are members of the G-20, Commonwealth, IOR-ARC, ASEAN Regional Forum, Asia Pacific Partnership on Climate and Clean Development, and have participated in the East Asia Summits.
  • Both countries have also been cooperating as members of the Five Interested Parties (FIP) in the WTO context.
  • Australia is an important player in APEC and supports India’s membership in the organization.
  • In 2008, Australia became an Observer in SAARC.

“Sanjeevani – Lifestyle Clinic” 

  • An integrated facility, aptly named the “Sanjeevani – Lifestyle Clinic” to provide advice on diet, exercise and behavioral counselling thereby rendering comprehensive preventive and curative care on lifestyle diseases to all serving & retired personnel and their dependents has been inaugurated at the Armed Forces Clinic, New Delhi.
  • The aim of “Sanjeevani – Lifestyle Clinic” is to sensitise Armed Forces personnel and dependents identified to be at risk, regarding lifestyle disorders, prevent and manage chronic disorders like diabetes, hypertension and obesity etc, without pharmacologic interventions by promoting a healthy lifestyle through dietary education, exercise and positive motivation.
  • This novel initiative by the Indian Army, will promote healthy lifestyle as a method of preventive healthcare, and ensure safe and drug free therapy, for reversing various metabolic disorders. This initiative will bring a positive change to quality of life and self-confidence of affected serving soldiers, veterans and their families.

Biden Promises Zelensky Advanced Air Defense Systems                 

  • US President Joe Biden on Monday promised to provide advanced air defense systems to Ukraine after Russian missiles rained down on the capital Kyiv and other cities, the White House said in a statement.
  • Biden spoke to President Volodymyr Zelensky and “pledged to continue providing Ukraine with the support needed to defend itself, including advanced air defense systems,” the statement said.
  • The Biden-Zelenskyy phone call came shortly before the open debate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a draft resolution condemning Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
  • After speaking with Biden, Zelensky tweeted that “air defense is currently the number 1 priority in our defense cooperation.”
  • Kyiv said Russian forces had fired more than 80 missiles on cities across the country and that Russia had also used Iranian drones launched from neighbouring Belarus
  • Biden “conveyed his condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured in these senseless attacks,” the White House said.

ASTROSAT Completes 7 Yrs In Orbit                        

  • AstroSat, India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength observatory mission has completed seven years in orbit in September. To celebrate the occasion, ISRO organised a two-day conference titled “Celebrating Seven Years of AstroSat” providing a platform for astronomers to share their findings from AstroSat.
  • AstroSat was launched into a low earth orbit of 650 km and a low inclination of 60 on September 28, 2015 from Sriharikota using PSLV C-30 rocket.
  • During his address, Shri S Somanath, Chairman ISRO / Secretary, DOS, mentioned some of the discoveries from AstroSat exemplified the multi-institute nature of the mission, how different research institutes from India realized multiple payloads onboard AstroSat and also talked about the international collaboration. Shri Somanath informed ISRO’s upcoming science missions and posed new challenges to the research community on how to benefit from the AstroSat experience for ISRO’s future humanned missions. One such challenge is estimating the radiation environment and how to safeguard the astronauts from the harmful effects of radiation. Chairman, ISRO also said how AstroSat data has led to several discoveries and other exciting results like solving the puzzle of a red star bright in Ultra-violet, detection of X-ray polarization from the off-pulse region of Crab pulsar, enhanced emission from Butterfly nebula, maximally spinning black hole to rare triple thermonuclear bursts from an X-ray binary. One of the major results of AstroSat is the discovery of Lyman alpha photons from a galaxy 9.3 billion years away.

Indian Army Day Parade To Be Held In Bengaluru Next Year

  • The Army Day Parade next year will be held in Bengaluru as part of initiatives to hold major events outside the national capital region.
  • Army Day is held on January 15 every year to mark the taking over of first Indian officer as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on this day in 1949.
  • As part of the initiatives in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directives to celebrate national and military events outside Delhi, the Indian Air Force held its Air Force Day parade and flypast in Chandigarh.
  • Due to the change in venue, the wreath laying at the National War Memorial was also held one day before Air Force Day on October 8.

OTA Chennai Passing Out Parade Will Be Held On 29 October 22
