India, Australia Conclude Maritime Exercise Near Perth

  • The Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) between the navies of India and Australia concluded on Saturday. INS Sumedha participated with HMAS Anzac in the exercise reaffirming the strong navy-to-navy links and interoperability.
  • Indian Navy’s INS Sumedha was docked at Perth in Australia to celebrate India’s 76th Independence Day on Monday.
  • INS Sumedha is an indigenously built Naval OPV deployed for multiple roles independently and in support of Fleet Operations. She is part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based and functions under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, ENC.
  • The visit of INS Sumedha underscores India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and shared objectives of the two countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain and the Indian Navy’s commitment to building bridges of friendship and strengthening cooperation with friendly maritime nations.

Ocean Sailing Expedition On INSV Tarini To Mauritius

  • Cmde Sanjay Panda Commanding Officer, INS Mandovi flagged off a sailing expedition from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius in early hours of 20 Aug 22. The expedition is being undertaken by a crew of six (incl three women officers), onboard INSV Tarini.
  •  Covering a distance of almost 2500nm (approx 4500 km) one way, the crew, over a period of 20 – 21 days is expected to face extreme weather and rough sea conditions of monsoons. In addition to sailing in these conditions, the crew will also be undertaking boat upkeep, machinery routines and preparing their meals. The passage would be nonstop once they leave the Indian shores.
  •  The Indian Navy has six ocean-going Indian Naval Sailing Vessels (INSVs) viz Mhadei, Tarini, Bulbul, Hariyal, Kadalpura and Neelkanth in her inventory. These yachts regularly undertake expeditionary sailing with a small crew of naval personnel. The crew for the sea sorties is selected from volunteers with adequate sea sailing experience.

GRSE Making Seven Vessels For Foreign Countries 

  • Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd is making seven vessels for foreign countries, out of the 23 ships that are in the different stages of construction, its chairman and managing director Commodore (retd) P R Hari said.
    • GRSE, which had bagged the prestigious Rs 19,294-crore order for the construction of three advanced stealth frigates under Project 17A for the Indian Navy, has already launched two of these ships and the construction of the third one is in full swing.
    • The Kolkata-based warship maker is constructing six patrol boats for Bangladesh and an ocean-going passenger and cargo ferry vessel for the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
    • GRSE, which has so far delivered 107 warships with the maiden INS Ajay in 1961 being India’s first indigenously made warship, has been a profit-making company for the last 28 years.

India In Advanced Stage of Talks With US For Procurement of MQ-9B drones    

  • India is in an advanced stage of negotiations with the US to procure 30 MQ-9B Predator armed drones at a cost of over USD 3 billion to crank up its overall surveillance apparatus along the LAC with China and in the Indian Ocean, people familiar with the development.
  • The long-endurance-hunter-killer drones are being procured for the three services as they can carry out a variety of roles including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, over-the-horizon targeting and hitting stationary ground targets.
  • The MQ-9B drone is a variant of MQ-9 “Reaper” that was reportedly used to fire a modified version of the Hellfire missile which eliminated al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in the heart of Kabul last month.
  • In 2020, the Indian Navy had taken on lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones from General Atomics for a period of one year for surveillance in the Indian Ocean. The lease period has been extended subsequently.

Indian Defence Forces To Get Emergency Powers To Acquire Critical Weapon Systems  

  • Seeking to further strengthen operational preparedness, India is likely to allow defence forces to buy critical weapons systems under emergency acquisition powers which would allow them to buy any system or equipment under the fast-track route.
  • The powers, which were first granted to defence forces post-Uri surgical strikes in 2016 during heightened tensions with Pakistan, have been helpful in tackling the military standoff with China going on since May 2020.
  • The case for granting emergency acquisition powers to defence forces is expected to come up for discussion in a high-level defence ministry meeting planned to be held next week.  
  • The emergency powers allow forces to acquire any new or in-service equipment on a fast-track basis to improve preparedness for conflict situations.
  • In the previous approvals, the defence forces had the power to sign deals for equipment worth Rs 300 crore and the products had to be delivered within three months to one year.
