World Mosquito Day

  • World Mosquito Day, observed annually on 20 August, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria to humans.
  • Prior to the discovery of the transmitting organism, vector, there were few means for controlling the spread of the disease although the discovery of quinine in the treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment.
  • According to one survey, nearly half the world population was at significant risk from malaria in the 19th century with a 10% mortality among those infected

Former PM Rajiv Gandhi Remembered On His Jayanti

  • Rajiv Gandhi (20 August 1944 – 21 May 1991) was an Indian politician who served as the sixth prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989.
  • He took office after the 1984 assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to become the youngest Indian Prime minister at the age of 40.
  • Gandhi was from the politically powerful Nehru–Gandhi family, which had been associated with the Indian National Congress party.

Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2023 To Be Held At Indore

  • The 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2023 will be held at Indore in January next year.
  • External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet.
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated every year on the 9th of January to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.
  • It also commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India on 9th January 1915.

Over One Lakh Villages Declared As ODF Plus

  • Over one lakh villages have declared themselves as open defecation free (ODF) Plus. Jal Shakti Ministry said, these villages are sustaining their ODF status and have systems in place for managing solid and liquid waste. They are also working towards making their villages cleaner, greener and healthier.
  • The top five performing states are Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh where maximum number of villages have been declared as ODF Plus. 
  • Prime Minister Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission, almost eight years ago, with a vision to make the country open defecation free. The Ministry said Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen reinforces the Government’s commitment to promote hygiene and safe sanitation and thereby improve the quality of life of its citizens.

65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

  • An Indian Parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be attending the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPA) at Halifax in Canada.
  • This conference is scheduled to be held from 21 August to 26 August. The Conference will also be attended by 23 Presiding Officers and 16 Secretaries from State Legislatures in India who are also members of the CPA.
  • During the Conference, 8 workshops will be held on various subjects. Speaker Om Birla will participate as a panelist in a workshop on ‘People’s Parliament: Accessibility through Innovation.’

IMF Team To Visit Colombo

  • International Monetary Fund’s team will visit Colombo next week to continue discussions with the Sri Lankan authorities on economic and financial reforms. The team will be in Colombo from 24th to the 31st of this month.
  • In a statement, IMF said, the objective is to make progress toward reaching an agreement on a prospective IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement in the near term. It said Sri Lanka’s public debt is assessed as unsustainable.
  • It said approval by the IMF Executive Board of the EFF program would require adequate assurances by Sri Lanka’s creditors that debt sustainability will be restored. IMF team would also continue the engagement with other stakeholders during the visit. The team will be led by Mr. Peter Breuer and Mr. Masahiro Nozaki.
  • The island nation defaulted on its 51 billion dollars foreign debt in April this year.
  • Sri Lanka is continuously seeking help from the International Monetary Fund and other nations.
  • The country of 22 million people is facing its most severe financial crisis since independence in 1948, resulting from the combined impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic mismanagement.

BIMSTEC Secretary General To Visit India

  • BIMSTEC Secretary General Tenzin Lekphell will visit India from 22nd to 25th August. At the 5th BIMSTEC Summit held in Sri Lanka in March this year, Leaders of the BIMSTEC member states adopted the BIMSTEC Charter.
  • BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. India had stressed the importance of rapidly consolidating this newly created regional organization and moving BIMSTEC cooperation to the next level.
  • Mr. Tenzin Lekphell will hold discussions with senior Indian officials on how to make the BIMSTEC organization and cooperation forward in keeping with the mandate of the BIMSTEC Leaders.
  • India leads the Security cooperation pillar on the BIMSTEC platform that includes Disaster Management, Marine Cooperation, and Energy Security.

Xi Jinping, Putin To Attend G-20 Summit In Bali

  • Indonesian president Joko Widodo has said China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin both plan to attend the Group of 20 summits in Bali in November. He said both the leaders have confirmed their visit.
  • This is the first confirmation that both leaders will attend the summit. It will be the first global summit since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the heightened tensions over Taiwan.
  • It would also be the first time Mr. Xi has left China since January 2020 when the country shut its borders at the start of the Covid pandemic. Since then, he only left the mainland to mark the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China on July 1 this year.
  • The November summit will be much awaited given that US President Joe Biden is also expected to attend. However, it’s not clear if he will meet Mr. Putin.
