7th Annual Defence Dialogue
- The 7th Annual Defence Dialogue between India and Sri Lanka was held in New Delhi on February 23, 2023. It was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and his Sri Lankan counterpart General Kamal Gunaratne. During the meeting, the ongoing defence cooperation activities between the two countries were reviewed, with both sides agreeing to increase the complexity of bilateral exercises. In the context of training, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to avail maximum benefits from each other’s experience and capacities.
- Shri Giridhar Aramane thanked General Kamal Gunaratne and his delegation for a fruitful dialogue and stated that India looks forward to continued engagement based on the common understanding reached at the dialogue.
- The Indian delegation also included officials from Ministry of Defence, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Service Headquarters and Ministry of External Affairs. The Sri Lankan delegation included Commander of Sri Lankan Air Force Air Marshal SK Pathirana amongst other senior dignitaries.
- This Annual Defence Dialogue is the highest institutionalised interactive mechanism between both the countries. Its significance in chartering the future course of the relations between the Armed Forces of India and Sri Lanka was highlighted by the importance given to the talks by both sides. The Armed Forces of both countries continue to seek bilateral cooperation in multiple fields and increased engagements are a positive sign for the future of bilateral relations.

1st Medium Range Surface To Air Missile Regiment Of the Indian Army Raised In Eastern Command
- In a significant boost to Indian Army’s Air Defence and Capability development along Northern Borders, the first Medium Range Surface Air Missile (MRSAM) Regiment is being raised in the Eastern Theatre.
- The Regiment has been equipped with MRSAM Weapon System indigenously developed by DRDO.
- “The MRSAM weapon system which is also called the ‘Abhra’ Weapon System is a state of the art medium-range air defence weapon system and is a joint venture of DRDO and IAI with active participation from Indian public and private defence industry partners including MSMEs“.
- Lt Gen RP Kalita, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command during the first visit to MRSAM Regiment highlighted that with such giant leap towards indigenisation in defence sector, India will soon become self-reliant in defence manufacturing in line with the national aim of “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
- As per an official release, the first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) Regiment is raised in the Eastern Command. The Regiment has been equipped with MRSAM Weapon System indigenously developed by DRDO.
Indian Army Introduces Online Entrance Test
- A computer-based online examination has been introduced as the first filter for recruiting soldiers in the Indian Army which aims to streamline the process, Indian Army’s Director General of Recruiting Lt Gen N S Sarna said.
- When asked about the need to change the process, Lt Gen Sarna told, “We felt that today the technological threshold and also the proliferation of the mobile phones has gone to the rural areas and spread across the country.
- DG Sarna also revealed that the examination will be held at end of April across 176 locations across the country.
- “The candidates can choose any of the five locations they can suggest and we will allot one of the locations to the candidate“.
Over 31,500 Refugees From Myanmar, Bangladesh Took Shelter In Mizoram
- Over 31,500 refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh have taken shelter in different parts of Mizoram, an official said. The number of Myanmar nationals taking refuge in the northeastern state was 31,050 as on January 27, and those from Bangladesh were 541.
- Mizoram shares a 510-km-long porous border with Myanmar and a 318-km boundary with Bangladesh.
- Mizoram Home Minister informed the assembly that the state gov has so far released over Rs 3.8 crore as part of relief measures for the Myanmar nationals, and Rs 30 lakh for those from Bangladesh.
Host India Does Not Want G20 To Discuss More Sanctions On Russia
- India does not want the Group of 20 nations to discuss additional sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine during New Delhi’s one-year presidency of the bloc, six senior Indian government officials told.
- The officials, who are directly involved in this week’s G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank chiefs, said the war’s macroeconomic impact would be discussed but India does not want to deliberate on additional actions against Russia.
- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has not openly criticised Moscow for the invasion and instead called for dialogue and diplomacy to end the war. India has also sharply raised purchases of oil from Russia, its biggest supplier of defence hardware.
Is UNSC Effective To Address Contemporary Challenges- Bharat
- India’s permanent representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj questioned the fundamental structure of the UNSC & asked if the principal organ is not effective in dealing with contemporary challenges to global peace and security.
- “India remains steadfastly committed to multilateralism and upholds the principles of the UN Charter. We will always call for dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable way out.”
- Along with India, China and Pakistan also abstained from voting in the UNGA on the need to reach comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
- In the assembly, 141 voted in favour of the resolution, 32 abstained, including China and India and seven voted against it.
- Kamboj further stated that India’s approach to the Ukraine conflict would continue to be people-centric. India is providing both humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and economic support to some of the neighbours in the Global South under economic distress, even as they stare at the escalating costs of food, fuel, and fertilizers – which has been a consequential fallout of the ongoing conflict.
