Rs 494 crore FDI Received In Defence Sector Since Revising Policy: Govt
- India has received around Rs 494 crore of foreign direct investment in the defence sector since revising the policy relating to it in September 2020, the government said in Lok Sabha on Monday.
- In 2020, the government announced increasing the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit from 49 per cent to 74 per cent under the automatic route and up to 100 per cent through the government route in the defence sector.
- According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement in the next five years.
- Bhatt said the government has issued 584 defence licenses to 358 private companies for setting up manufacturing units.
- In addition, there are 16 defence public sector companies manufacturing various platforms and equipment for the armed forces.
Construction of All Weather Roads in Border Areas
- The government constructed 2,088 km of roads in areas bordering China in the last five years with an expenditure of Rs 15,477 crore, the government said on Monday. In total, the government spent Rs 20,767 crore on constructing 3,595 km of border roads during the period that included those in areas along the frontiers of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
- Rs 4,242.38 crore was spent to construct 1,336.09 kms of road along the border with Pakistan, while an expenditure of Rs 882.52 crore was incurred to build 151.15 kms road along the frontier with Myanmar in the last five years.
- BRO was conceived and raised in 1960 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for coordinating the speedy development of a network of roads in the North and the Northeastern border regions of the country.
- It works under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.
- It has diversified into a large spectrum of construction and development works comprising airfields, building projects, defence works and tunneling and has endeared itself to the people.
Former Indian Army COAS Naravane, Ex US Defence Secretary honoured for strengthening Indo-US ties
- Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has been honoured by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) for his role in strengthening ties between India and US.
- The USISPF presented global leadership and public service awards to those persons who have been instrumental in strengthening ties between the US and India.
- Along with Naravane, former US Defence Secretary General Jim Mattis has also been awarded the public service award.
- Gen Naravane retired on April 30 and has shifted to his newly-allotted accommodation in Delhi Cantonment since that day.
- In a distinguished military career spanning over four decades, Naravane had the distinction of tenanting key command and staff appointments in peace and field, both in the North-East and Jammu and Kashmir. He was also part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka.
- Former Indian Army Chief commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, raised an Infantry Brigade, was Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), and commanded a Strike Corps in the Western Theatre. His staff assignments included tenures as a Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Defence Attache at Yangon, Myanmar, an instructional appointment in the Army War College as Directing Staff in the Higher Command Wing, besides two tenures at the Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army), New Delhi.
Tata Advanced Systems Successfully Delivered To Indian Army
- Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) successfully delivered the indigenously developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle-Medium (QRFV) to the Indian Army on Monday.
- Initiatives taken by the Centre to encourage the production of indigenous defence equipment have resulted in cutting the expenditure on defence procurement from foreign sources from 46 percent of the overall expenditure to 36 percent in the last four years — 2018-19 to 2021-22.
- In April, Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane had inducted the first set of QRFV. As per a defence release, the Army Chief had inducted the QRFV, Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), Ultra Long Range Observation System developed by TASL and Monocoque Hull Multi-Role Mine-Protected Armoured Vehicle developed by Bharat Forge.
Tamil Nadu Pips UP In Attracting Investment For Defence Corridor Projects
- The Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC) has arranged investment worth potential of Rs 11,359 crore through MoUs with 42 industries, said MoS Defence,.
- While the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the nodal agency for Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) has signed 69 MoUs with industry with potential investment of Rs 10,545 crore.
- In UPDIC the actual Investment of Rs 1,767 crore has been made by the industries and in TNDIC actual Investment worth Rs 3,176 crore has been made by the industries.
Defence Industrial Corridor
- It was announced by the Prime Minister while inaugurating the UP Investors Summit in Lucknow in 2018.
- The government has established another Defence Industrial Corridor in Tamil Nadu.
- A defence corridor refers to a route or a path along which domestic productions of defence equipment by public sector, private sector and MSMEs are lined up to enhance the operational capability of the defence forces.
Significance:
- It will help in making the nation self-reliant in the field of defense production and promoting ‘Make in India’, which will reduce our imports and promote the export of these items to other countries.
- It will provide a fillip to the defence manufacturing ecosystem through synergistic development of technologies, promote the growth of private domestic manufacturers, including MSMEs and Start-Ups.
