Delivery of Indigenous Aircraft Carrier ‘VIKRANT’
- Indian Navy has created maritime history today by taking delivery of the prestigious Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant from her builder Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi. Designed by Indian Navy’s inhouse Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by CSL, a Public Sector Shipyard under Ministry of Shipping (MoS), the carrier is christened after her illustrious predecessor, India’s first Aircraft Carrier which played a vital role in the 1971 war. Coinciding with the celebrations to commemorate 75th anniversary of India’s independence ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the reincarnation of Vikrant is a true testimony to the country’s zeal and fervor in pursuing capability build up towards enhanced maritime security.
- The 262 mtr long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes which is much larger and advanced than her predecessor. The ship is powered by four Gas Turbines totaling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 Knots. Built at an overall cost of close to Rs. 20,000 Crs, the project has been progressed in three Phases of contract between MoD and CSL, concluded in May 2007, Dec 2014 and Oct 2019 respectively. The ship’s keel was laid in Feb 2009, followed by launching in Aug 2013. With an overall indigenous content of 76%, IAC is a perfect example of the nation’s quest for “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” and provides thrust to Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
- The ship would be capable of operating air wing consisting of 30 aircraft comprising of MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) (Navy).
9,000 Crores Of Budget Already Given To Indian Defence Industries For Ammunitions: Army Chief
- Emphasising the need for self-reliance and sufficiency in critical defence requirements, the Chief of the Indian Army staff, General Manoj Pande, on Thursday, said that a budget of 9,000 crore has already been given to Indian Defence industries for ammunitions.
- “Our external dependence on armaments and ammunitions have been a matter of concern and the reversing of this trend which we are witnessing is quite encouraging,” he said addressing a special session of the second conference on Military Ammunition ‘Ammo India 2022’ on its second day.
- There is a huge potential for exports which can also contribute to the vision of our honourable Prime Minister’s vision of a $5 trillion economy.
- Speaking on the ongoing world affairs, he mentioned that external dependence on other countries for weapons should be reversed. “Russia-Ukraine conflict, the uncertainty in our neighbourhood has taught us that our armed forces should be able to handle the wide spectrum of tasks,” he said.
Maldives Defence Force Chief receives Guard of Honour in New Delhi
- Maldivian National Defence Force Chief, Major General Abdulla Shamaal received a Guard of Honour in the national capital on Thursday.
- He visited India to strengthen the bilateral ties and defence cooperation between the two countries.
- New Delhi has provided Lines of Credit of over USD 1.2 billion for infrastructure development besides several grants for community development projects in the island nation. Since 1988, defence and security have been major areas of cooperation between India and the Maldives.
- India has emerged as Maldives’ second-largest trade partner, with around 13 percent market share for Indian exports. India gifted 200,000 doses of Covishield vaccines to the Maldives in January – February 2021.
- India and Maldive conduct the joint military exercise ‘Ekuverin’.
India, France, UAE Hold Trilateral Talk To Boost Maritime Security
- A trilateral meeting of the Focal Points of India, France and the UAE was held on Thursday where three sides exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific region and explored the prospects of maritime security among other areas of cooperation.
- The three sides exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and explored the potential areas of trilateral cooperation including Maritime Security, HADR, Blue Economy, Regional Connectivity, Cooperation in Multilateral Fora, Energy and Food Security, Innovation and Startups, Supply Chain Resilience and Cultural and People-to-People Cooperation.
- India and France are maritime nations with dynamic maritime economy sectors like marine technology and scientific research, fisheries, port and shipping, to name a few. Possessing vast exclusive economic zones, their fate is closely linked to the sea and the ocean.
- India and UAE enjoy strong bonds of friendship based on age-old cultural, religious and economic ties between the two nations. They established diplomatic relations in 1972. While the UAE opened its Embassy in India in 1972, Indian Embassy in UAE was opened in 1973.
Indian Navy Receives Two MH-60 R Multirole Helicopters From US
- The Indian Navy on Thursday received two MH-60 R multirole helicopters from the United States at Cochin International Airport. The third helicopter is scheduled to be delivered in August this year, while the delivery of all 24 MH 60R helicopters will be completed by 2025.
- Back in 2019, the United States had approved the sale of 24 MH-60R multi-mission helicopters to India under its Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The approval was made in order to improve the security of a major defensive partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
- The value of the potential is USD 2.6 billion. The MH-60R is the most advanced marine multi-mission helicopter currently in use. The induction of state-of-the-art mission-capable platforms will significantly boost the integral Anti-submarine warfare capability.
World Conservation Day: Army Spreads Awareness On Waste Management In J-K
- The Indian Army has taken up the cause of generating awareness among the masses by taking on the challenge of waste segregation on the occasion of World Conservation Day.
- Under this initiative, dry and wet waste get segregated and further processed, creating a huge impact on nature, as well as improving the condition of the area by avoiding any illness and other diseases from being spread.
- In line with Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, the Indian Army addressed these environmental issues with various initiatives and campaigns. Indian Army put up posters Enroute between Baltal and the Holy Cave to spread awareness amongst the pilgrims for waste segregation and waste disposal, which assisted in spreading the message throughout the country.
- World Nature Conservation Day is observed every year on July 28. The day recognizes the fact that a stable and healthy society is built on a healthy environment. This year, the whole world is observing it with the theme of ‘Living Sustainably in Harmony‘.
2 Pilots Killed In Mig-21 Aircraft Crash Near Barmer In Rajasthan
- Two Indian Air Force pilots were killed when their twin-seater Mig-21 trainer aircraft met with an accident near Barmer in Rajasthan Friday night.
- The IAF said the accident took place around 9:10 pm.
- A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari following the crash.
- “Deeply anguished by the loss of two Air Warriors due to an accident of IAF’s Mig-21 trainer aircraft near Barmer in Rajasthan,” Mr. Singh said.
- The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is a supersonic jet fighter and interceptor aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union.
