World Day Against Trafficking In Persons

  • In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons and declared that such a day was necessary to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
  • Human trafficking is a crime that exploits women, children, and men for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex.
  • Since 2003 the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has collected information on about 225,000 victims of trafficking detected worldwide. Globally countries are detecting and reporting more victims and are convicting more traffickers.
  • This can be the result of increased capacity to identify victims and/or an increased number of trafficked victims.

World Nature Conservation Day

  • World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated on 28 July every year.
  • The day is observed with an aim to safeguard our natural resources and preserve our environment at large.
  • The primary aim of World Nature Conservation Day is to save the plants and animals that are on the verge of getting extinct.
  • The day also aims to draw focus on the individual action that can be taken to save our resources and the environment at large.
  • One World Nature Conservation Day, here are a few reasons why humans should save the environment or at least be environmentally aware:
    • Protecting the environment means protecting humanity.
    • Forests Harbour a variety of wildlife species, so cutting them down will lead to the ecosystem being destroyed.
    • It is a way to give our future generation a better place to live.
    • A balanced ecosystem results in a good amount of rain that helps farmers to grow crops and provide us with the food we need.
    • Preserving the environment slows down climate change, which has become the first and foremost concern around the world.

Dr. Kalam Remembered On His Death Anniversary

  • 11th President Of India, He Was An Instrumental Force Behind The Development Of Agni And Prithvi Missiles.
  • Dr. Kalam Also Authored Numerous Books, Including The Famous Wings Of Fire And Ignited Minds, Which Inspired Children And Adults Alike To Pursue Their Dreams.
  • Born On October 15, 1931, In A Modest Family In Rameswaram.
  • In 1958, Dr. Kalam Joined The DRDO, And Over A Decade Later, In 1969, He Moved To The ISRO.
  • Returned To DRDO In 1982 And Implemented The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program Earning Him the Name  “Missile Man Of India”.
  • May 1998 Pokhran- II Tests Made Dr. Kalam A Household Name.
  • He Was Awarded Padma Bhushan In 1990 And Bharat Ratna In 1997.
  • On July 27, 2015, He Passed Away Due To Cardiac Arrest During Lecture At IIM, Shillong.

International Tiger Day

  • Global Tiger Day, often called International Tiger Day, is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation, held annually on 29 July.
  • It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia.
  • The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.
  • International Tiger Day has been shown to be effective in increasing online awareness of tigers through information search.
  • India Is Home To 52 Tiger Reserves Spread Across 18 States.
  • The Last Tiger Census Of 2018 Showed A Rise In The Tiger Population. 1411 In 2006 To 2967 In 2019.
  • India Achieved The Target Of Doubling Of Tiger Population 4 Years Ahead Of Schedule Of The St. Petersburg Declaration (2010) On Tiger Conservation.

16th Meeting Of National Association Of Street Vendors

  • The Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri has said that the Street Vendors have been, are, and will always be an essential part of India’s economic growth story, with strong linkages with the urban informal economy.
  • The theme of the meeting is ‘From Encroachers to Self-Employed’.
  • SVANidhi Scheme:
  • SVANidhi Scheme was launched to benefit over 50 lakh street vendors who had been vending in urban areas including those from surrounding peri-urban/rural areas.
  • It also aims to promote digital transactions through cash-back incentives up to an amount of Rs. 1,200 per annum.
  • National Association of Street Vendors of India:
  • NASVI is an organization working for the protection of the livelihood rights of thousands of street vendors across the country.
  • The main objective was to bring together the street vendor organizations in India so as to collectively struggle for macro-level changes.
  • The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014:
  • It was enacted to regulate street vendors in public areas and protect their rights.
  • The Act defines a “street vendor” as a person engaged in vending of articles of everyday use or offering services to the general public, in any public place or private area, from a temporary built-up structure or by moving from place to place.

5 More Ramsar Sites Added By India

  • India has added five more Ramsar sites, or wetlands of international importance, bringing the number of such sites to 54.
  • A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, which is also known as the ‘Convention on Wetlands’ — an intergovernmental environmental treaty established by UNESCO in 1971, and named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed that year.
  • Newly Added Sites: Karikili Bird Sanctuary (Tamil Nadu), Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest (Tamil Nadu), Pichavaram Mangrove (Tamil Nadu), Sakhya Sagar (Madhya Pradesh), Pala Wetland in Mizoram (Mizoram).

Rs 1.64 Lakh Crore Rupees Revival Package For BSNL

  • The Cabinet Has Approved A Project For Saturation Of 4G Mobile Services In Uncovered Villages To Provide 4G Mobile Services In 24,680 Uncovered Villages In Remote And Difficult Areas.
  • The Union Cabinet Also Approved The Revival Package Of BSNL Amounting To One Lakh 64 Thousand Crore Rupees.
  • This Will Help BSNL To Improve The Quality Of Their Existing Services, Roll Out 4G Services And Become Financially Viable.

Russia To Withdraw From ISS Project After 2024

  • Russia has decided to quit the International Space Station after 2024. Moscow’s space agency Roscosmos ‘ newly-appointed chief Yury Borisov announced the decision.
  • President Vladimir Putin was also briefed about it. The announcement comes as tensions rage between the Kremlin and the West over Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine and several rounds of unprecedented sanctions against Russia.
  • Russia and the United States have worked side by side on the space station which has been in orbit since 1998. Yury Borisov also told Putin that despite this decision, the space program will continue to get top priority and Russia will start putting together a Russian orbital station before 2024.
  • Sending the first man into space in 1961 and launching the first satellite four years earlier are among key accomplishments of the Soviet space program and remain a major source of national pride in Russia.
  • NASA has made no immediate comment on the Russian decision to quit the International Space Station after 2024.
  • US State Department spokesman Ned Price called the announcement an unfortunate development given the “valuable professional collaboration our space agencies have had over the years.
  • National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said the US is “exploring options” for dealing with a Russian withdrawal.

Leicester Cricket Ground Named After Sunil Gavaskar

  • In England, the Leicester Cricket Ground has been named after India’s legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar.
  • The former Indian cricket team captain Gavaskar is often considered one of the most skilled batters ever.
  • He was the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs and once held the record for most number (34) of centuries. During the 70s and 80s, when West Indies were ruling world cricket, Gavaskar was impressed with his impressive technique against the Windies’ fast bowlers. He was also part of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup.
  • there has been a ground already named after Sunil Gavaskar in the Kentucky area of the United States of America (USA) and there is another ground going through its finishing touches in the Zanzibar area of the African nation Tanzania which is also named after the former Indian opener.
  • Now the news has come through that the Leicester Cricket Ground, the ownership of which lies with Bharat Sports and Cricket Club, has decided to name the ground after Gavaskar to acknowledge his immense contribution to uplifting Indian Cricket to a certain height.

India To Host 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup

  • International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that India will host the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. India, Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka were named as the four hosts for ICC women’s white-ball events from 2024-27 yesterday.
  • Bangladesh will host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, while the 2026 edition will be held in England. Sri Lanka has secured hosting rights for the Women’s T20 Champions Trophy, slated for 2027, provided it qualifies for the event.
  • The hosts were selected via a bidding process overseen by an ICC Board sub-committee which included BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.
  • BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah said that BCCI will leave no stone unturned to make it a memorable event for everyone concerned. Mr. Shah said, we have the infrastructure in place, and we will have a very successful edition of the World Cup.
