Rajnath Singh Visits Premier Radar Station Of IAF  

  • The Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh today visited a premier radar station of the IAF, where he witnessed the functioning of the Integrated Air Command & Control System (IACCS). The system is the backbone of IAF’s march towards network centricity and is a key enabler in operations. The system’s capabilities endow its users with an enhanced situational awareness that reduces IAF’s sensor-to-shooter loop. The robust system has redundancies built into its functioning which enables seamless operations between its assets across the country.
  • During his visit, the Hon’ble RM demonstrated various networked operations conducted at varied locations across the country. These included the networked and synergised operations of fighter, transport and Remotely Piloted aircraft.
  • He was also briefed about the nuances of peacetime Command & Control functions which include ensuring the air defence of critical areas on a day-to-day basis, as well as during large events. In his address, the Hon’ble RM complimented the air warriors for keeping the nation’s skies safe throughout the year.  

Kartanaka Notifies New Aerospace & Defence Policy

  • The State Government will develop Bengaluru, Belagavi, Mysuru, Tumakuru and Chamarajanagar as aerospace and defence manufacturing hubs with an aim to attract $ 6 billion in investments and add about 60,000 jobs over the next five years.
  • This is part of the new aerospace & defence policy the government has notified, offering generous sops for investments from setting up parks to R&D as well as manufacturing.
  • The five locations will have aerospace and defence parks with SEZs. A private investor can promote a park under a 100% privately-owned and privately-operated model or under a public private partnership model. In the PPP model, the government will invest up to 26% of equity which will be in the form of the value of the plot.
  • The policy seeks to develop Karnataka as an aerospace and defence manufacturing hub including maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) and space applications and strengthen the R&D infrastructure.

India Has World’s Largest Population, Security Council Must Reflect Geopolitical Realities: UNGA  

  • President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid has said that current geopolitical realities have to be reflected in the Security Council and India has the world’s largest population.
    • Shahid said during his one-year tenure at the UN he asked the member states to hasten the process and UNSC will lose credibility if reforms do not happen soon. The UNGA session will begin later this month.
    • The five permanent members are the United States, Russia, the UK, China and France. China has not expressed support for India’s permanent membership. To hasten the UNSC reforms, India is also working with G4 (India, Japan, Brazil and Germany).

DRDO Confirms Successful Trials of Enhanced Range Pinaka Rockets In Pokhran, Balasore       

  • Trials of the Made-in-India enhanced Pinaka Rockets were successfully conducted at Balasore and Pokhran over the past few weeks, DRDO said.
  • Manufacturers of the system- Munitions India Ltd and Economic Explosives Limited – met user requirements at trials’ completion, the DRDO said.
  • Earlier this May, DRDO also confirmed the trials of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) being successfully conducted at Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR).
  • ATAGS is a fully indigenous towed artillery gun system project undertaken in mission mode by DRDO as a part of the artillery modernization programme of the Indian Army.
  • The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has been developed by the DRDO and produced by two firms Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited.

Indian Army Organises National Sports Day For School Children Near LOC 

  • Indian Army organised National Sports Day at Government Upper Primary School in Kamkari near the Line of Control in Machhal Sector of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir. A total of 3 teachers and 55 children participated in the event.
  • Sports, such as cricket, football, kabaddi and kho – kho were organized for the children.
  • National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 in India every year as a tribute to our hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand who was born on this date in 1905.
  • The Day has been dedicated to the great athlete and hockey player Dhyan Chand who won gold for India in the Olympics thrice and was also known as The Wizard of Hockey.
  • The President of India gives away the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award on this day at the Rashtrapati Bhavan to sportsmen and coaches across various sports.
  • This day has been used as a platform by the government to launch various schemes or programmes.
  • Chand played field hockey for the United Provinces team from where he got selected to play for the Indian team that went to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
  • In the 1928 Olympics, the Indian team won gold defeating their opponents by huge margins. This was the country’s first gold medal.
  • Dhyan Chand netted many goals and international newspapers described him as a ‘magician of hockey’.
